600 cfm 4160 holley carb with edelbrock performer intake i JUST put on the truck(351m) smell fuel runnin rich, HORRID gas mileage(MUCH worse then it should be, vaccume secondaries) like seriouslly a ride around the block about 1 mile burned almost a quater tank... im goin to have the carb tuned better tomarow at my shop but i was just wonderin is this the main thing that could be wrong with it? runs rough at idle tends t o load up fuel dont see ANY drippin from squirters. could it jsut be possible that im ONLY runnin too rich? i mean the truck ran OKAY with my SHOT holley 2 bbl on it before?
edited post i also forgot to add that a friend DID try to tune it an it ran slightly better but the idal RPMS are VERY eratic! rough idal strong fuel odor the truck diesiled when i shut it off jsut now(rarely ever does that) did get a backfire out of the exhaust... WAS backfirein a little while runnin untill my friend attempted to tune it by ear, do you guys think this is solely a carb tuning issue?
Sounds to me like its dumping fuel down the center, probably from a bad power valve, or gasket maybe. A backfire can blow the power valve if its in the intake. Thats the most likely if its not dumping it down the venturi's..

i thought since the early 90s holley has been makein there carbs with "unblowable powervalve systems"? aka i thin kround 92 or so holley carb power valves cannot EASILY be blown? i know i had no bad backfires out the carb... i only had ONE but it wasnt bad and havent had one since i had the carb slightly tuned?
**** BIG PROBLUM I DISCOVERED... while checkin everythin out turns out the fuel line that connects to the outgoin on my fuel pump(the line that goes to the carb) is LEAKIN BADLY... just shut off its a steady drip under drivein conditions it must be a steady drip/flow. the leak is at the little piiece that screws into the pump but not the pump itself so hopefully i only need to replace the line. would this be the answer to all my symptoms possibly?

Yeah...i'd say thats at least a big problem. Fix that first before you mess with anything else.
where'd you get the carb btw, was it used, or did you get it brand new? Brand new they're usually set pretty well, but if it's used who knows how someone else tuned it?
Btw, i never had a problem with power valves blowing on my holley, when i was getting my engine running i must of had that thing backfire up through the carb 50 times, never damaged the valve.
yea the carb was new never touched fuel but it had been sittin for a while in a garage. the secondaries float was stuck and dribblin fuel down noticed that when i looked into the rear barrels and saw it pourin adjusted the front float to be safe ahad a friend adjust carb by ear till i can use the vaccum gauge at my shop to adjust it right. turns out the choppy idles related to cylinder 4 and 5 not fireing? cant figure out why it has compression fuel and spark even swapped wire and plug still didnt fire in 4 and 5 and cant figure out why. gonna do an ACTUAL compression test in those cylinders tomarow. had NO problums before i put the new manifold and carb in. now its doin this? any ideas any one? my exhaust is also goin *pop* *pop* *pop* *pop* *pop* *pop* while its idaling and im assumeing thats the unburned fumes goin into those cyls hittin popin in the exhaust. truck runs smoothe at high rpms tho and i cant figure out wth is goin on with that? any ideas?
