ok. that seal is for the back of the hub. the one i was referrin to is the one for the hub **** assembly on the front that will keep moisture out and keep it from gettin rusty in there again..
i would recommend brake cleaner and steel wool to clean the rust out.
the socket you need is part # KD 3246 and is two and 5/8ths inches from outer edge to outer edge. the half ton is KD 2467 and is two and 3/8ths.
yeah the seal is on the new lockouts. i really owe you one man, you've really helped me a lot. the haynes manuals don't really indicate all that much i'm finding out. it's good to find someone in the know.
no biggie man. i was lucky enough to be shown how to do it by my old man when i was 15. we put new bearins in my 76 F100. last summer i had to change the rotors on my 91 F250, and you have to take the whole hub off to do it, so i repacked my bearins while i was at it. just on wednsday i put new warn manual in it to replace the autos that were no longer workin. took me about 45 minutes of total work time to do both sides. course that was just the locks, but you get the idea. knowledge is power. and i like to share. lol.
well i got the new socket, 2 5/8ths so we'll see what tomorrow brings. i asked the guy at the store the other day if it wasn't the ones with the protruding things, but he said it was the other one i had. oh well live and learn. from looking at the grease that's towards the back still looks pretty good, not anything like up front, i think the bearings will be ok, i am going to repack them though.
You need to look closely at your bearings and races. They should look like they have a mirror finish. If they look pitted, frosted, heat colored they should be replaced as a set. The races are a pain to get out and a new one back in but must be done if you replace bearings.
i usually dont listen to the guys at parts stores when they tell me i need somethin to do somethin. i just get what i know i need. in this case, i guess you really had no was of knowin for sure what you would need though. keep the other socket though. you never know when you may tear into somethin to find out that that is what you need.
