Wheel-Bearing Basics .. what this guy refers to as the "lock ring" but cannot see is the little wire ring that rides in a groove around the outermost part of the hub. this is what you need two flat jewelers screwdrivers to remove.
Mr.N's Dana 44 build up this one shows the ring, but unfortunately, the picture quality is poor.
ok. this might go against what some would say, but you have new hardware to go in its place. get that metal ring out, cut it, bend it, twist it smash it, what ever you have to do to get it out of the housin. once its out, your hub will come out, then you can get to lock nuts.
wow i didn't even notice that little ring in there. i'll go out and look at it when i get my algebra homework done, thanks everyone. if anything else comes up i'll check in with you guys again.
i would advise, from the looks of your hub, checkin the condition of your bearins. looks to me like youve got some rust mixed with your grease. if it was me, id just get new bearins. for SURE, see if you can find a solvent tank to use to clean ALL of the old grease out, of your hub housin and the bearins. if not, take some shop towels and wipe em out as best you can, then spray it with some brake cleaner. let it all dry, then pack your bearins and put a thin coat of grease all over the inside of the hub housin as well. put an equally thin coat on the lockouts for smooth operation. dont forget to clean and put a coat on the spindle as well.
ok finally got that little ring out of there, i didn't even notice it in there before. so i got the internal parts out, but the hub still won't come off, i took some more pics of it. not sure if there's still something inside holding it.
hang on. let me go grab mine and look. they come in two sizes, big (half ton), and bigger (three quarter ton). ill go see what the NAPA part number is.
i didn't notice the rubber seal, but i bought new seals. i didn't take the whole thing apart to look at it once i got it apart. actually the grease on the inside didn't look as bad as the rusty stuff on the outside, but i'm going to clean it up well. do you think a drill with a wire brush is advisable to get some of the surface rust off the spindle and then put some grease on it?
