New gear reduction starter, we made new negative cables using solder-on terminals, with all of the materials coming from NAPA, repaired the + cable at the starter terminal and shrink wrapped everything. Now it starts right up.
Is it necessary to run 3/0 to the starter from the battery? I made a new cable and used 2/0 from the passenger battery to the drivers and then down to the starter. I made one continuous line with a terminal soldered on for the passengers side. Also, what size wire are you guys using for the starter wire from the relay to the starter? How about from the BAT post on the alternator to the relay? I'm just trying to get some ideas here so i can get things wired properly. I'm gonna go look for a 3G alternator i think. I'm planning on putting a stereo system in the truck soon so I want it to be able to handle the power demands to run it. Ohh, does the ground cables from the battery have to be mounted to the front two spots on the block??? I was thinking about relocating them to the back where the tranny mounts to the block using the top two bolts?? I have a little oil leak problem on the front and I think it's causing a bad connection between the cable and the block.
its not.
in fact after the 80's (like on my 93) they went to 2/0
it was stock 3/0 going down to the starter on your truck.(pretty sure i see an 80's rig in your avy?)
its good to have 3/0 for those of us in cold county.
2/0 will work though,or they wouldn't have switched.
i went with 3/0 throughout, and i run 4 AWG relay to the starter.
oil wont hurt.in fact it will reduce corrosion/rust.so don't worry about your grounds.
just be sure to pull them, and shine up the block with sand paper, and then reconnect them every year or two.after you hook them back up,smother the ends with grease even.
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, it's an 84. I don't run the truck in the winter so I guess I don't need the benefits of the 3/0 cable. Gonna change the relay to starter wire though. I've got small stuff on there now. I guess i should clean up the mounts for the grounds cause its pretty dirty. Degreaser here we come!!!!
Got my 3G alternator today and i'm very excited. Can't wait to get it installed. I wasn't sure where to put this to share my excitement.......hahaha. I was actually looking for a transfer case at this guys house and it just so happened he had a few kicking around.....after he looked in 20 different spots for it!!! HAHA
