is it normal for the front driveshaft to turn on a dually when in 2wd? If not is there a motor or something that might be sticking or low fluid in the transfer case?
ok. its just the night i purchased the truck i was getting 18mpg and thats the first time i used 4wd that and ever since i have been getting 14mpg, with intake chip and exhaust. i dont remember my brothers front shaft turning when its in 2wd, hes got a f250. didnt know if duallys where different setup up front or something. Just doesnt seem right for it to turn all the time
Its normal for it to spin. There's some drag from the bearings in the front hubs. You can double check that you dont have a hub stuck locked by turning the u-joint behind the wheel. It should spin, and might take some force. If it doesn't move, then you have a small issue.
Mine never turns unless I flip the switch, but I am running Warn hubs. I don't recall if the shafts turn with the factory hubs or not. As mentioned above, you should be able to turn the drive shaft by hand when not engaged.
i have not check the driveshaft yet, my brother is the one that told me the driveshaft was moving so he told me to lock the hubs and see what happens, so i did and the drive shaft turned faster he said. I am gonna check if i can turn the front driveshaft this morning. Can it be checked if in park?
mine was started doing that and it was one of two things. either the hubs can unlock and free spin or the hub was just starting to seize up. either way replace the hubs with warn hubs and it stopped.
i checked the front driveshaft and it does turn by hand when parked. Warn hubs are next in line. I do plan changing the front wheel to a regular wheel up front, are dually hubs and regular hubs the same?
Maybe i am missing something here, but when in 2wd the front DS should NOT be spinning when going down the road. If hubs are in AUTO and the 4wd shift on the fly is off or in 2wd..( cant remember what it says on the ****), should not be spinning. Definitely have a hub/4wd issue. Your mileage will go down and just wearing parts driving around for no reason.

The front drive shaft will spin somewhat due to the drag created by the front bearings on the axle shafts. I've been behind plenty of fords and can usually see the front u-joints spinning. As for mileage going down with the hubs locked in, it really doesn't (0.5mpg at most, usually less). Mine stay locked in almost all year. The only time I take them out is if I plan on 100% highway driving. I lost more mpg from a stuck caliper pin then the hubs being in.
