Okay so everything has been fine up until now! Went out to start the truck for work; the starter spun once and failed to start then when I try her again all I hear is "click" and thats it. The starter isn't even spinning now. WTF!?
Be careful with tightening the small 12-14 gauge (trigger wire?) on the starter solenoid. Make sure that the inside nut is tight before you attach the cable and tighten down the outside nut. Apparently if the inside nut is not tight, then the bolt will start to spin freely when you tightn down the outside nut and subsequently will break free some of the wiring inside of the solenoid. I just found this out the hard way over the weekend.
^ And if all that checks out, it could be the starter soleniod itself. These starters have a solenoid right on the starter itself that handles the heavy contacting current and also helps throw the bendix out to the flywheel and hold it there until you let go of the key. When it fails, you get a dead "clicking" noise and sometimes no spinning at all depending on how it failed (sometimes reaching under with a hammer or broom handle can get it to kick back on one more time to get you home). The solenoid can be replaced separate from the starter, so replacing the whole starter is not needed if thats really what went wrong.
I think I'm going to just grab a new solenoid, they're only $27 and thats Lordco's through the roof type price, so thats where I'll start. If I need a new starter then thats a little more but still not too bad so thats option number 2. We'll see; I'll pick up a new solenoid tomorrow after work on my way home.
