the place where im at got broken into. among the things stolen were my keys. only key. im not there and wont be for another 10 days. im anxious they will come back and take it. bad neighborhood. im gonna get it towed to a safe place i think. not only do i have to get keys made, im thinking i need to have the truck rekeyed. Now, the Question-- how does one do that and how much does that cost? Or, if i choose, because of expense of it {dont have alot of money right now} how and where do i get a duplicate made? in a bind here guys,, please help. thanks.
IF IT WERE ME AND SOMEONE STOLE MY KEYS. I WOULD REPLACE ALL CYLINDERS. THE DEALER OR SHOP CAN MAKE UP ANY KEY CODE AND KEY THE CYLINDERS TO MATCH THAT NEW CODE.
ill make a call today and see how much that is gonna run me. gotta change my tonaue cover too. gonna have the locksmith who did our doors look at it. ill ask him about doing all of it. thanks
I called ford the other day and asked about having a new ignition switch and key set made. It was EXPENSIVE. Not worth it to me.
If I was you I would find a salvaged truck and remove ALL the key locks and switches and use that.
the thing with taking the keys from a salvage truck is the key its self. it would have to be reprogramed. where if you just change the cylinder they make it match the existing key. that way there is no reprograming. also if the dealer makes a new key code he can write that down so if you loose those keys they can just cut you a new one. the other way you are S.O.L. and you have to start all over again. a dealer can't get key codes for anything over 10 years.
If you have two keys, getting a new key is cheap
If you have one key, getting a new key is a little expensive
If you have no keys, I'm willing to bet ford charges an arm and a leg!
Cheapest way out is probably to get the remote-start key bypass for the computer, and take the cylinders from another truck. Worry about the key programming later.
Your keys have a chip in them. To rekey the truck you would have to rekey all the cylinders, and then have the ford dealer program the vehicle to accept your new chipped keys. I would say atleast $700 for it all start to finish, possibly more. If you had 2 original chipped keys, you could program some additional chipped keys, making the chipped key that was stolen unable to start the vehicle if they tried.
I would check with my insurance company and see if they would be able to cover the cost since they stole your keys. They may or may not cover it, but it would be worth a shot.
Got keys made for my truck. ended up using my girlfriends locksmith whose card was on the fridge. wasnt 500+(ford) or 250 (yellow pages). He showed up as soon as i called, opened it, cut a door key, made two chippers for 130bucks. coolbeans. "locksmiths are like lawyers. everybody needs one" snowhiker
