I have a 92 F-350 4x4 crew cab with a 7.5l and E4OD transmission. The overdrive planetary is destroyed and upon further inspection just about all of the hard parts are pretty worn out. In my research of this forum and other internet searches I found that the 4R100 is basically a newer version of a E4OD. My question is can I take all (or most) of the internals of a 4R100 and put them in my case? I have a 4R100 out of a 2004 Navigator that I plan to use as a donor. I know the tail shaft is different and something about a drum that runs a sensor. Can I use the valve body and/or solenoid packs? Are there any other parts I shouldn't use? I have not picked up the donor transmission yet but will over the weekend. I'm getting the whole trans for $100 and if all I get to use is the planetaries and a few other hard parts I will be money ahead. Thanks in advance for any responses.
You can use almost everything from a 4R100. You want one from a diesel or V10, the 5.4L version has some weaker parts. If you have a gear driven speedo on the E4OD you will need to use those parts, not the 4R100 parts there.
I started to tear into the donor transmission and found a broken snap ring that did some pretty good damage. I was able to get a replacement out of a 99 5.4 f-250 4x4. This one has a tag that says it's been rebuilt by Ford. When I took this one apart the fluid was nice and red, almost nothing on the magnet and the clutches look good. I'm just going to inspect the parts and re-install without buying a rebuild kit. Should I (can I) use the valve body from my 92 e4od or the valve body from the 99 4r100? The new planetaries are 3 pinion aluminum, I'm pretty positive I want to upgrade the o/d planetaries with a steel 4 pinion. Should I upgrade the other planetaries with the 6 pinion or are they less prone to failure?
