header exhaust-pics?

78 f150 4x4 short box. 400 motor

i wanto put headers on my truck, and it looks like they are all fender exit only? just wondering how everyone else has run the exhaust pipes from the headers back. im more worried about drivers side than the passenger side. pics would be great if anyone has them!

Well, I'm not sure if it's different between a short bed and a long, but I'd doubt it...
Go to summitracing.com, enter in all the vehicle ID info correctly, click through the item sections to exhaust, then to headers, then to full length headers, and there are several choices there for a 400.
I got the black painted Hooker ones and have had no problems. Installing them was a little tricky though. The passenger side one wouldn't bolt down all the way towards the back because it hit the heat shield underneath the passenger side floor. I cut part of the heat shield out and now it fits, but the floor there does get really hot.
Why are you worried about the driver's side?

Fender exit headers are awesome. They free up a ton of space to do tranny swaps, clutch adjusting etc. They keep the starter cooler for longer life, and it is mega-easy to route your own exhaust set up after the headers(no bending). Straight pipes = less restriction = more power.

im worried about the drivers side bc i dont know too much about how/where the headers come out of. do they sort of "wrap" back around the frame so its back under the truck? back to the drivers side worry though, the passenger side i can use the same path that it has now, but for drivers side, im not sure if id have to route it all the way back from that side, or if i cross back to the passenger side and run it to the back with the same path. the drivers side doesnt look like i could fit exhaust pipe between the front drive shaft and the frame....im stumped ha

One of the nice things about fenderwell exit headers is there is nothing in the way, a straight shot back. Easy to put on, just a little fenderwell trimming, No heat soaking the starter + they look & sound cool.

they come out right by the front driveshaft. there is no wrapping them around the frame. every exhaust shop i took my truck to just laughed at me. there is little if any clearance, unless you are using 2" pipe. i'm running 2 1/2" pipe myself and i know there isn't a exhaust shop in a 50 miles radius that can make the bend to route it back unde the truck. i'll go out to the garage and take a few pics tonight

it will work temporarily till i too, can figure out a way to run the exhaust all to one side

Just bought a truck on 3/1 w/ this set up in it

my 79 super cab has the shorter/closer to the truck headers in it, the 2-1/2" pipes come off the collectors, turn 90 deg. to the outside of the frame rail, and then 90 deg. back to the catalytic conv. and mufflers, dumping just in front of rear tires ..sorry no pics of that set up

I had fender well headers on my truck when I originally purchased it. I had issues with big tires rubbing while off-roading and when the steering was cranked hard over. Done right they work well. Take a look at my gallery, there is a set of photos under 'headers 101'. I don't have starter issues nor did I loose lots of room for other things to be worked on. Oh, and the pipe is 3".

thanks for all the input guys. i cant have it a low slung as lostinfords, i think id ruin them once i went wheeling. and i agree, that i cant run it drivers side between the shaft and frame. so i guess ill have to run the drivers side over the passenger side right behind the motor and run them down the passenger side until i get past everthing and split them off from there

garypettengill- your pictures helped a lot. but i wasnt planning on running 2-1 as you did. i want to run 2 pipes back with nothing connecting the two. but, i see how the drivers side header kind of turns towards the passenger side, like the stock manifold does. but since yours look like short headers, im not sure if the long tubes are the same way.

The long tube units are completely different. Mine are a set of Sanderson block huggers for the 335 series engine. I had a terrible time finding long tubes which did not have issues with some other item under the truck. Either they interfered with the drive shaft or would require modification of the transmission cross member or something else. I also had issues due to another fuel tank under my truck. I removed the tank from inside the cab and installed a later model 17 gallon unit between the frame rails just behind the transfer case. Everything under my truck seems to be a close/tight fit.

I'm having this same issue and would love to see pictures of guys setups. this is off topic but you mention a 17 gallon tank behind the transfer case, what year and model is this tank from? I need something like that for my truck project.
