68 merc problem
hey there, i have a 68 m100 with a 360, and 4spd, when i just recently tried to start it the solenoid started to click very loudly, at first i thought it was just a dead battery so i boosted it and it stated fine i let it idle for about 20 min and shut it off and tried to start it again and all i got was the same loud clicking from the solenoid. My question is would this be the voltage regulator causing this, or is something wrong with the alternator? any info would be great thanks.

Your battery could be gone and is not chargeable. If it will crank with a boost leads me to think battery.
Parts stores in the south will test your battery for free. Just don't shut it off or drive it at night till you figure it out.

Check your voltage with the engine running. It should be around 13.5. If it's not, then chances are the alternator or voltage regulator is about done. It could also be the fusible link between the alternator and solenoid, but that's not overly common without some large overload.
