i had to limp home due to a short? speedometer bouncing.
yesterday,i noticed my speedo would peg over to 0 when i hit a bump.i didn't think much of it.figured a connection must need cleaning.
so today after work,i load up with brush and head home.about 7 miles from home,i notice the speedo really going crazy (it's raining today.)
then i thought to myself,if this keeps up,my trans is going to downshift(due to the electronically controlled E40D).well sure enough the needle started staying pegs at 0 mph long enough for the trans to keep searching between 3/4,so i said ok,il turn off OD.this worked for a mile, until it got worse.i had to slow down to 30 mph because it was starting to search between 2/3 and i didn't want it to rev to high of course when she hit number 2 lol.
so.......the question is.whats wrong? and what do i look for first?
thanks guys!
I had the same thing on my 96 with e40d and it was the rear end speed sensor. or vsp vehicle speed sensor cost me 160. at the dealer. yep the speedo was all over the place and it couldnt find the right gears darn near put you through the window. Good luck

like 30 bucks.
id like to do this of course,as i can drive over 30mph sooner lmao
someone tell me if im on the right track here?
ah,easier fix than expected.i didn't need to replace it.
the ram to my dump had chafed the wires to the VSS.so i just had to repair the line and wire tie it back out of the way.
that explained why it did it mostly on bumps lol.the ram would come down and pinch the wires.there's two wires, and one of them was just about cut right off.she wouldn't of went much further, other than slow in first gear haha.
anyway.back in action.false alarm kinda.
now to build a little block for the rear of the ram to sit on.i see it's just starting to wear into the rear diff cover/very top lip of it.so don't wont this.
