egr
I have 95 aerostar with 4.0. tried using vaccum lines to find egr valve.......no luck. tried finding egr riser tube.....cant find that either. i think egr should be on drivers side but not positive. also, i thought someone may have taken egr off but i cant even find any evidence of anything like a riser off exhaust manifolds. can anyone tell me where the little houdini is supposed to be in detail? It failed emissions due to high nox. egr or cat conv. probable causes (so i'm told). has 1.5 year old cats.
If you put junk cats on, then it is reasonable to expect them to fail. I would suspect that is part of the story. But the other part of the story is that the original converter never should have failed. If it did then the car has a problem. That problem will eventually destroy every replacement converter you install. I know this is not hypothetical either, I deal in lots of converters. My Aerostar has over 220,000 miles, still has the original converters, and is very close to zeros on HC, CO, and NOX.
You should perform a complete tune up including plugs and wires using only the parts recommended in the sticky on the top of this forum. You can run Seafoam or Berryman's B12 through a vacuum line to clean the intake and combustion chambers. Replace all cracked or split vacuum lines. Clean the MAF sensor and replace all filters. Try the test again and if it fails after all that, you will need to replace the converters.
If you have EGR it will be plain to see, the components are not small, you would not miss them! Cant say about the 4L but on it's baby brother, the EGR tube comes off the Ex manifold right next to plug #6 (driver side rear plug). It basically rises vertically & connects onto the intake manifold via the EGR valve behind the IAC & TPS. There is also an DPFE unit in front of the EGR valve, which is vacuum controlled. Evidently it works quite well since I've never heard the engine pinging or knocking etc. Also NOX emissions are low. Problem is that the EGR tube is obselete, so if it rusts out or breaks....... big bucks!

Aeroman.
EGR not until late 95 OBDII Aeros
