Has anyone experience a problem with their expy not stopping when the brakes are applied. I have had this happen about five times in the last year with my 97 expy. When I apply the brakes I get a grinding or thumping sound along with a stiff brake pedal. It requires that I literally stand up on the brakes. After it happens once It may be months before it occurs again. I have taken it to two different dealers and each can't find anything wrong with the brake system. This is begining to irritate me. Any help is appreciated.....
I have a 1997 Expedition and has also experienced the same braking problem that you've described. It happen to me once last week and a subsequent inspection by my dealer revealed nothing wrong with my braking system. I think this is a rather serious problem and I have drafted a letter to Ford urging them to investigate this problem further. I get quite nervous now when I get behind the wheel of my Expedition. I urge you and any other Expedition owners who've experienced the same problem to also contact Ford about this bizarre anomaly. You can also enter your problem description at their web site (www.ford.com).
I took the truck in today for the fourth time to have it looked at but only this time I told them to specifically check the ABS system and not just the braking system as I did with the previous three dealers that looked at it. This time they found that the ABS sensors are bad and need to be replaced. What a releif to have a solution. But of course not a cheap fix. I was quoted $100 for each sensor(2) and about $100 labor to fix the problem.
You might want to check and see if you have a Kelsey-Hayes brake system as I do on my 2000 Expy. This company had major problems with Chevy and GMC trucks and vans. I saw where they are being sued in a class action lawsuit for unexplained total brake failure in Chevy, GMC full sized trucks & vans. Caused several deaths and over 167 accidents. I don't know why Ford switched to them. They used to use Bendix master cylinders, boosters, and calipers. Let me know if you have Kelsey.
Yes, the problem was definately the sensor. Luckily only one was bad and had to be replaced. It could not be determined for sure until the ABS light came on and stayed illuminated and allowed for the service guys to tap into the computer to get the error code.
