1998 Expy anti-lock brake problem

I have this 1998 Expy and occasionally I'll hit the brake pedal to come to a stop on dry pavement and the pedal "fights back" similar to the anti-lock brake system activating. The brakes don't totally engage when this happens and the truck will continue to roll!! A couple of pumps on the pedal and all is well. Has this happened to anyone else?

It sounds like you have air in the lines, try bleeding the system.

Moneypit F-150; You may want to make sure the abs sensors are clean on each wheel if they get too much build up on them they may act this way,
just spray each eye with brake parts cleaner & this will remove most debris.

I would also remove the sensors and check the tone rings for chipped teeth or cracks.

I have also had this problem with my 1999 EB. It has happened to me 2x, and it seems that it has happened when it is raining. The pavement was not wet enough to cause the ABS to 'kick' in and after it happened the ABS light came on. Any suggestions and is this the same as what you have had happen.

Yeah the A.B.S. light has come on but not immediately after the brakes faded. Checking the A.B.S. sensors sounds like the thing to do first. THANKS for the advice!!

How do you get to the ABS sensor eyes?

How do you get to the ABS sensor eyes? Aren't they inside the hubs?

Bada Bing! A bad wheel sensor would cause the ABS light to be on all the time, since it's not the sensors and wiring are okay. The feeling you're getting in the pedal is the ABS kicking in because it thinks one of your wheels is locking up. A cracked tone ring, or one with any missing teeth will make the ABS think one of the wheels is locking up. Of course if you find crud built up on them, a good cleaning would be the first (and cheapest) thing to try.

OK, while removing the front left ABS sensor the outer plastic housing seemed to be jammed in the hub assembly. Consequently the sensor broke, leaving the outer shell of the sensor still in the hub assembly. Is it possible the hub assembly overheated due to a bearing issue and the sensor fused to the hub assembly? Do I now need to replace the hub assembly?

My wife's 98 did the same thing to me several times and it scared the crap out of me because this happened just after we bought it (second hand dealer) I took it back they told me they couldn't find the problem and unhooked the ABS we have driven this way for a while now.

Does anyone have pic's of the sensors and the tone rings thanks
