Question Tool Box Size- Width/ Length

What would be the best size box for my 2001 F250 Super- Duty? I read that the 72" box is what is recommended but was wondering if it ran out too far over the edges? Anybody using a different cross-size? I don't want the edges to look goofy sticking out past the cab.

Tool Box Size- Width/ Length

I have a "Delta" aluminum diamond plate tool box on mine, that mounts on top of the bed rails. It measures 70 inches wide, and hits the rails caps exactly in the middle. My truck measures exactly 74.5 inches wide on the aft part of the tool box. So if you wanted to go with a 72 inch box you would have 1.25 inches on both sides.

I orginally bought a box that rested on the floor of the bed, and sat below the bed caps. Unless you walked up to the truck and looked into the bed you didn't even know I had a tool box. The problem with that box was it sat so low in the truck you couldn't get anything out without crawling in the bed of the truck, PITA. My truck is a 4X4 with 285/75R16 tires, no lift, so it sits a little higher than stock. I'm 6"2" and it was still a problem getting thing out of the tool box.

Hope this helps..

Gwilkrrs,

I dont know the measurements of the box I tried, Sorry ! I bought it from Lowes, it was also a "Delta." The only other issue I had was how to secure it. I had no way to hold it down. My truck has the factory Ford "Duraliner" in it, so I had no place to bolt it down.

I have several rental houses so I'm always having to do repair work. I keep all my tools in my truck tool box, because you never know when and where you are going. It was a real pain everytime you needed a screwdriver, hammer, chiesel, etc, to climb in the back of the truck. So that tool box did not last long.

I have a Weatherguard box in my 2000 PSD 4X4. I went with the sits in the bed, like a previous post its not easily seen until you walk up to the truck, but a hassle to get into unless your 7' tall.
If your in construction work, a Knaack box would be an excellent choice I have a box that measures 60" long, 24" wide, and 22" deep sitting in my '87 F250. Its dry weight is around 150 lbs, and fits nicely between the back of the bed and the wheel wells.

I got the largest single lid tool box from Highway Products and it does not stick out past the edge of the bed. Actually I think it is a hair too small, but it doesn't stick out which is nice. They are a bit pricey, but well worth it as they use heavy guage aluminum, and rivaled only (In my opinion) by Protech boxes. 1/8" aluminum is pretty tough. I think the web addresses are www.protech.net and www.1800toolbox.com for Highway Products. Hope this helps.
