I'm wondering just what transmission I have in my one month old 2003 SD 250 7.3 PS. On the computer read out and window sticker it is listed as ELECT 4-SPD DIESEL AUTO TRANS. Nothing is mentioned about the overdrive that it has. It definitely shifts 3 times (four different ratios) with the overdrive off and then of course it has that last shift with the overdrive on (five ratios). Is this the diesel trans that has been around for awhile or is it a TorqShift? I've only seen the TorqShift mentioned in conjunction with the new 6.0 PS. And lastly, it is listed (for an extra $250.00) with a Transmission Power Take-off Provision. I'm hoping that some of you more experienced owners can tell me what some of the uses for a power take-off might be. To pre answer the question as to why I paid for something I probably will never use - it was love at first sight so I can't be held responsible.:P
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Dec-02 AT 08:08 AM (EST)]The only automatic with the 7.3L is the 4R100. It's a four speed overdrive transmission with a lockup torque converter.
There are three shifts plus the torque converter lock, which feels just like a shift.
The TorqShift is only available with the 6.0L diesel. It won't even bolt to the 7.3L, so don't ask if maybe the factory made a mistake...

The power take off provision is a place on the transmission where you can mount a transmission driven hydraulic pump. This would be to power a dump body, hydraulic plow, etc. The pumps are available aftermarket, not from Ford, and they are REALLY expensive!

Thanks Mark. It's nice to know what's going on down there.
