Super Camper Special frame difference?

I just picked up a '74 F350 Super Camper Special to restore. It came to me without a rear bumper, so I found a few good ones locally on F250 rigs. Surprise! My SCS frame is narrower than the F250 frames I've measured. My frame is appx 34" edge to edge while every other '73 to '79 I've measured is appx 37" side to side.

So, the question is this: I need to put a bumper on my truck. Will this mean I need to build custom brackets, or are some available out there somewhere? And secondly, I need to replace the rear and main gas tanks. Is the rear tank a special size to fit within that narrow area as well? What about the long frame tank? Is it a different size?

I didn't realize the SCS had a different frame. Anyone have clarity on this....and any other differences other than the longer wheelbase and box?

I believe Highboys are also narrower in the frame rails.

I hate to tell you this, but the rear tank is not available anywhere. I seem to recall somebody locating a front tank somewhere a while back. I have heard of alternatives for the rear tank, such as K-5 Blazer and Bronco II fuel tanks.

For your bumper, you can either locate another SCS, get one off a High-boy, or off a Crew Cab. When I restored my crew, I cut the bumper mounts off a standard bumper and welded them back on.

The SCS is a unique vehicle. There are lots of differences from bumper to bumper, but most of the body panels interchange with other models, other than the bed itself and the lower bed trim.

Highboys and 1 ton frames are narrower than the rest. You should be able to pull the rear tank out of a 350 and put it in. the next time your at a jy, measure the tanks on newer model 350's and 4x4's. Make sure the truck is carburated so as to avoid the fuel injection pump.

Check with oddfordjunkie as he's in washington and may know where you can locate the parts you need.

F350s/SCS use the same frame width as a highboy and cab and chassis truck (~34" which is an industry standard)

hate to break it to you, but the larger rear tanks off a similar or newer flat bed won't work, the front-back measurement is too long (width is good though). the cross members are very close together, and because the axle is pushed so far back you'll run into diff clearance. There really is only one tank that fits back there unless you want to do some serious modification, the 18 or 19 gallon factory tank back there was literally all the fuel they could cram in that spot.
