So i was looking for replacement clutches and i am getting so many different options, not counting the DMF or SMF. My question is which one? I see 11", 11-1/4", 11-7/8", 12" and 12-1/4"
I have the clutch and flywheel out but I don't know what to measure. It is the widest part from tooth edge to tooth edge or is it just inside the tooth edge to just inside the tooth edge. Or is it the friction disk i measure. I know this is probably a stupid question to many of you but I just want to make sure I get the right item.
The clutch is the "friction disc" you mentioned.
The big steel wheel with the teeth is the flywheel, and the metal plate on the transmission side of the clutch is the pressure plate.
So to measure the clutch, you just measure the clutch! :-)
DMF vs SMF there are a million posts about, so if you still have DMF you might search and read up on it.
It's a 1991 f350 custom 7.3 n/a wrecker tow truck. I don't want to start the dmf vs smf discussion, I have seen that and made my decision already. I'm shopping for a clutch assembly the whole thing including the flywheel. My question above is in reference to that. If I shop around on rock auto it just gives measurments. It does not say if it's the clutch or flywheel so that's where I'm stumped. I want to order the correct sized set but I don't know what their measurments are for. Does anyone have an alternate website or store to check other than rock auto?
Flywheels are expensive. As you do not desire to get into SMF vs DMF, do you have reason to believe your flywheel needs to be replaced? If you have a machine shop nearby, they can check and deck it for you (usually)
In regards to the clutch size...I haven't check rockauto lately but most places sell clutch kits. Comes with a new pressure plate, clutch and alignment tool. If that is the case, they're advertised based off of the diameter of the clutch disk itself. Measure that and shop accordingly.
Alternatively, any auto parts shop, online or local should be able to help out with this type of purchase. It's nothing out of the ordinary.
To answer the next question....I'm preferenced to Luk clutches, but everyone has their own favorite flavor
OK so here is my next question. Say I have a 12.25 clutch on the truck now but I am only able to source an 11.25 clutch set locally. Are they interchangeable with my flywheel or does they flywheel have to be replace as well?
A change in clutch diameter could potentially cause the new clutch to not line up with the bolt holes on the flywheel. I don't have specifics as to what matches what unfortunately
you need the diameter of the pressure plate to match with the clutch disc.
if not, premature wear can happen.
i bought my south bend clutch from summit racing,it was expensive, but it was delivered the next day.

I'm no expert in this department but throwing a smaller clutch into a 1" larger setup would "work", just won't be optimized. I'd think it would be extra grabby because the springs in the pressure plate are heavier for the extra inch of surface area(which is about 20% more area on the 12.25" BTW)
And yes it will wear faster than the clutch it was designed for, of course.
Seems a local joint could order a bigger clutch for you and have it in a few days or get one online, I liked the Amazon prime shipping with my LuK.
Thanks again guys and my apologies for all the questions. Its very frustrating situation to be in. The clutch needs replaced and out of autozone, advanced auto, orileys, napa and carquest i cant find one compete set. Cant even buy one part one place and one part someplace else to make a complete matching set, thanks to the 5 different sizes offered. Then you add the variable of SMF or DMF. Why on earth are there even so many options regarding clutch disk diameter? Currently it has a DMF flywheel and I was told you cant resurface or even reuse a DMF flywheel. (again not trying to start the DMF vs SMF discussion) But Im at my wits end. I am going to attempt to slap a clutch kit in an 11.25 inch kit in and hope it mates with my DMF, and hope that the DMF and the clutch will last until the first of the year. Everything with this truck has been a nightmare from 7 different sizes of break drums to 3 different possibilities for break shoes. I know you guys love theses trucks but first of the year I am going to buy a new cab and chassis to transfer my wrecker bed to then scrap this truck.
I don't get where the hang up is. The only issue I could see is that your DM flywheel is what's busted, not the clutch.
If that's the story, you could have saved a lot of anxiety by saying that in the first place.
And if the flywheel IS the problem...then that's a lot pricier.
And oriellys has conversion kits too, Boom
The hang up was finding a matched set locally without having to wait a week or spend a $1000.00. eg an 11 inch clutch kit and a flywheel the same size available locally. In my searching i found 5 different sizes of clutches available, to make things worse there are 2 types of flywheels and you cant use a dmf clutch set with a smf flywheel so thats 5x5x2=50 possible combos (5 clutch sizes x 5 flywheel sizes x 2 types of flywheels) but it was impossible to find a matching combo local. after the fact i found out that any size clutch will fit onto the flywheel but even the flywheels are listed as size for some stupid reason. Thats where the hang up was. I do appreciate your links but I am good now. Again everyone thanks for the advice, support and information.
