koboss, I did that 1 time just to see, and it worked on my truck too. And you are right about the tailpipe. The 6.4 really does sound like a hair dryer.
it worked with mine waverunner, not sure if it is because of the flash i have but i tried it the other day with the e-brake on and in gear and it was blowing out the blue smoke like a banshy the exhaust was crackling and it said cleaning exhaust filter.
so i put a piece of cardboard up to the exhaust and after a min poof it caught on fire... those are some hot fumes!!!.
Whoever came up with the DPF, and the Regen cycle should get an award for the most retarded invention of the decade. Anything that tells you to continue to drive and waste fuel for 15+ miles to finish "cleaning" (which should be called "wasting") is completely idiotic... in my opinion.

Maybe so, but we are saving the world, aren't we????

Man I wish that was the case! While we sit here and play with our DPFs china is over there burning coal like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Bottom line is if we want to make a difference we need to perfect the use of hydrogen, and all power plants should be converted to nuclear. As well as harnessing all the natural sources like sun, wind, water, and geothermal. By the time this is up and running we will be close to figuring out time warp travel and bending the fabric of time woooohooooo!
I have a 2008 Job 1. It use to regen no matter what i was doing in fact at one time it was all you could do to hold it back at a redlight. Then one of the updates fixed that. After that it never seemed to do much in the way of regen unless I was driving. Well then the next flash that was suppose to show it on the dash, mine has never said it. I have friends with job 1 trucks like mine and their trucks say it. I asked one dealship about it and they said I didn't have the latest flash and that they would check it. But it still don't say anything. I took it to a different dealer today for a service and asked the tech about it. He says I have the most recent flash and that it does say regen and that if i've not seen it then it has not gone into regen. well I've put 15-20,000 miles since the last flash and I know it had regened since then.
I don't really care about the message, but I'm a little curious why i don't get it? anyone else with the same issue?
On the 2010 trucks the msg "Cleaning Exhaust filter" only shows for 2 second's at the beginning of the cycle and there is no msg to indicate that the regen cleaning process is complete. With the msg only appearing for 2 second's every few hundred miles it is very easy to miss it. If you do not allow the initial regen cycle to complete the DPF will begin to clog up and at a certain point the pressure differential will be sufficient to cause the "Drive to Clean Exhaust Filter " msg to be presented. This message will stay on until the DPF is sufficiently cleaned to reduce the pressure differential back to normal.
Failure to drive the vehicle in this mode long enough to complete the cleaning can permanently damage the DPF and leave you at the side of the road
With one tank of fuel my 2010 was regening every 60-80 miles. This I believe was caused by getting a tankful of LSD by accident instead of ULSD. With the next tankful which I made certain was ULSD my regening immediately dropped back to once every 500-600miles.
While driving my 2010 for several hours this past weekend with the overhead lie-o-meter reading an avg fuel economy of 14.5 mpg my truck went into the regen cycle with the 2 second "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" msg. I immediately started repeatedly pushing the trip computer reset button on my dash
Sadly I watched the spot fuel economy drop from 14.5mpg to about 9.4mpg for almost 20min's during the regen cycle while repeatedly pushing the reset button.
By paying close attention to the engine performance after about 20min's I felt the regen cycle complete and at that very instance the spot fuel economy started to climb back up to well over previous avg of 14.5 mpg that had been a mix of city and highway for several weeks since the previous reset.
While I find this incredibly wasteful I went into the purchase of this truck with the knowledge that my fuel economy would not be equal to that achieved with pre-DPF diesel's, but still better than my V10 I traded in.
Try burning a few tanks of B20. The soot generated w/ B20 has a lower light off temp and is "fluffier" than that from regular ULSD. It will passively regenerate easier so you won't have to go through the active regen as often.
Remember that the regen needs heat to initiate. Get the exhaust temperature up to minimize active regenerations.

My 08 job 1 had the same experience. I got the cleaning exhaust filter message at approprate times. When I last had it to the dealer they must have updated it and I haven't seen the regen message since. But I've put around 4000 mile on since then and the tailpipe is still soot free. also, my wife was driving and saw the message. She said it was only on for a couple seconds. So, unless you sit and stare at the message board you are likely to miss it. At least that's what seems to be going on with mine. The change was in late November or early december.
I have one stranger than that; my 2008 has not regened in over a 1500 miles. I took it in OCT 09 and had the latest flash that was supposed to light dash when it goes into regen. By JAN 10 I had not seen the dash or experienced a regen (to my knowledge). When I took it in for my oil change I asked about it so the tech checked it out and said everything was OK but it had not gone into a regen since SEP 09. I don't know if I am lucky or something is messed up, I would guess something is messed up. I live out in the boonies so every time I drive it I go at least 30 minutes at 40-50 mph. Mileage seems to be the same. Any help? (Sorry to jump in on your head scratching poster)
Heym markt1993, I caught it today. It flashed "cleaning exhaust filter" for about 2 or 3 seconds. Then I watched the computer read out AKA "lie o meter" unwind from 10.7 to 10.3 MPG. I worked all morning getting it up to 10.7 and watched it all disolve in about 10 minutes. But, I'll bet if you keep watching you will also catch yours. And anyone who gets the latest computer update from the dealer will have the same experience.
