I have the 11.25 axel on the truck and have had to replace the axle seal 3 times in the last year. I have checked the axle for burrs or rough spots can't see anything that would cause this. The seal get torn right by the spring around the seal about 1/4 the way around ripped off. Now to change the seal is fairly easy and cheap but I have to change the brake pads everytime as well as the get wet with gear oil. I was told this is a weak spot by the jobber where I get my parts but this is crazy every 3-4 months?
Any body have any ideas what is going wrong with this part? Any body run into this as well? It's getting really annoying replacing it so often. And it just seems to be that drivers side axle.
I HEAR YA!!!!!! I replaced the l/r inner seal 3 times so far as well. The 3rd time, it only lasted about 100 miles. anyone else??? I talked to the dealer today and he said sometimes the axle shaft is bent and that causes the hub assembly to wabble and blow the seal out. Hub--250, axle-175, seal-???20???. each time cost me almost 100. now i think its time to do some deep investigation. 0h, all parts are the same for all excursions and all single rear wheel super duty trucks from 99 through 05, yup, 05, not 04.
Found out I was using the wrong seal previous owner put the 11.25 seal in it, so I just replaced it with the same. Turns out I have the 10.5 rear and it needed the 2 part seal that rotates on itself. Replaced it with the proper one and no problems ever since it's been months and no sign of gear oil anywhere!
both the 10.25 and the 10.50 ford(sterling) axle full floating hub use a two peice seal where as the dana hub uses a single peice seal...another way to figure which axle you have is when you pop the axle off the hub if the flange has an o ring on the inner flange which mates to the hub its the ford axle where as the dana uses a gasket or sealer
Well, the seal went bad, so we decided to replace the bearings and seal on the l/r. About 2 weeks later, the seal went bad again. We replaced the seal again. Now within 100 miles, that seal is leaking too. I will check the vent tube for being clogged. Other than that, I just dont know. I didnt order the parts, my shop did so I have to a$$ume the parts are right.
