The front axles seals are leaking on my 04 expedition (eddie bauer w/ 4 wheel drive). It seems minor right now. Only wet with residue around the joint itself. No drips or spots on driveway. It has 64k miles on it. I rarely use the 4 wheel drive. Is this a common occurance or might I have another problem causing the seals to leak ? Will tightening the bolts potentially fix the leak? If the seals do need to be replaced what is involved?
Thanks for the input.
Maybe I'm calling it the wrong thing. Maybe its the cv unit? The melon is in the middle, then there's a solid housing that comes out almost to the wheel area, then there's a shaft with a collar & joint that comes out of that and goes to the wheel. That's where they are leaking
Is grease coming out from around the rubber boot? This boot covers your CV joint. When these go, they can shoot grease all around the wheel-well.
Check the rubber for cracks, holes, leaks. There is nothing else on the wheel side of the axle shaft that could be leaking grease or oil. I went 2 years with a leaky boot before replacing it but that is not recommended.
I have the same problem on my '04 EB. It leakes from the end of the shaft that comes from the rt of the front diff. It is seperate from the CV joint boot. Do you have any idea how to fix this?

That is an axle seal. The CV axle (part with the rubber boots on it) unbolts from a flange on the axle housing. Inside the axle flange should be a nut you remove. This allows you to pull the flange out and replace the seal.
I've heard that it's a semi-common problem with other 2nd generation Expy's, so you're not the only one. :0
I've had two leaky right axle seals in my 06's 115,000 life. The first time, the not-so-competant shop that I had replace it used a generic seal and 20,000 miles later, it was leaking again. My new shop replaced it with a Ford seal and so far, so good.
