Inner Axle Seal Question

so I'm doing ball joints on the 97 crew cab, to do that to my understanding you have to pull the axle shafts out. when i do that would it be a good idea to do the inner axle seals? or do the shafts separate further out so that seal area won't be disturbed when i do the joints?

and if i do have to do the inner axle seals how big of a pain is that to do? is it as simple as drop the carrier out change the seals stick the carrier in and torque it back down?

If the seals in the pumpkin aren't leaking, I wouldn't bother them. I have removed and reinstalled the axles several times without having to replace the seals. If they are leaking now, by all means replace them. If you remove the carrier, pay attention to the bearings on the carrier. Sometimes there are shims on the outside of the bearing cup. If there are shims there, take care to put them back where they came from.

when you remove the axles to do ball joints do the axle shafts come out all the way from the pumpkin or is there a slip joint somwhere out closer to the wheel hub?

On the F350s, the axles pull out of the pumpkin. On the F250 with the TTB front end, the drivers side axle comes out of the pumpkin, the passenger side will seperate at the inner ujoint, leaving a stub shaft in the pumpkin. The pumpkin has to be removed to get to the c clip hat holds the stub shaft in place.

On the 350s do you have to pull the front diff cover to get the shafts out? Are they difficult to get back in once they are out?

The axle shafts just pull out, after you strip down the hubs and pull the spindles. They arent to bad to replace, the long passenger side is a little mor difficult than the drivers side.

On the Dana 60 the axle just pulls out. I'm servicing the complete assembly getting ready to put it in my F250. There's a link to my thread down in my signature that has more pictures that may be helpful. I'm putting them up so I can remember how to reassemble it.
