OK, so I just bought my first dually and first diesel today. '04 F350 supercab, turbodiesel, plain-jane worktruck, to pull my camper with. Trouble is, when I first test-drove it yesterday it did great; smooth ride, smooth acceleration, no smoke. When I went back to pick it up today and pulled out of the parking lot it would hardly run and lots 'o black smoke. Dealer blamed it on cool temp (about 30F), and told me to let it warm up some since it was just started (by them and they brought it around to me so I thought I was good to go). So I let it Idle for about 10 min and started out again. More of the same, but after I crept down the road about 1/4 mile it levelled out and was good to go, performing perfectly. So, I got paranoid about warming it up all day and did so for about 20 min tonight before I left work. Did great until I had driven it about 15 miles (30 mile trip home from work) and then it started bucking like a bronco. No smoke, but would not accelerate and hard jerking. The harder you press on the pedal, the worse it is. If it was a gas engine, I'd say it was flooding out; but obviously its a diesel. Any help??
kinda sounds like my truck when the turbo crapped out...I would head straight back to where you bought it and let them deal with it! I wouldn't think the cold weather would make it do that either, 30F is pretty warm weather for alot of the members here I'm sure more will chime in soon with more help than me.
Forgot to metion it is a 6.0.........I know. I've now read a lot on the 'net (shoulda done that sooner) and realize there are problems with this engine. When it's good though..it's really good. Love the truck, but it absolutely just bogs the hell out and anything above idle is too much for it......
As said above, I would take it back and let them deal with it, or get my money back and keep looking, getting an oasis is a good thing to do before buying any 6.0.
Just noticed your a newbie here so welcome to FTE. If you drop down to 6.0 you will get more feed back on what could be wrong with the truck, which might help you decide whether to keep the truck or not, but definately take it back to the dealer as you only have 3 buisness days to back out.
It sounds like the turbo to me as well. for alot of black smoke to come out at first and now none doesnt make sense but still sounds like it is locked up or its completly blown. Do you have a boost gauge? If so what is it running at? If not can you still hear the turbo whine? If you dont know much about diesels, since it is your first, take it to a garage and have them do a once over on it and have them check the turbo. Alot of times if there was any work done on the heads and they dont get tightened down right or if there was a chip put in the truck then you may have extended the head bolts too far which is causing it to buck and lose your compression, less power.
Well, this AM it won't even idle. Rump-rump, black smoke is back, then dies. Time for the wrecker to get it back to lot. Can't wait til dealer opens up this AM......we need to have a conversation. BTW, no boost gauge, and can hear turbo.
Uh-oh.....just found out that the Great State of North Carolina does not have any type of cooling-off period, 3 days or otherwise with regard to used vehicles. In other words, if the dealer wants to be an a**, I'm stuck. I suddenly have this sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach.....
