Which one is reliable?

OK .. like a fool I let a guy talk me into trading my beloved 7.3 in for a truck i am ashamed to name here. One month and I have learned my lesson. I want my Ford back!! Problem ... cant find a nice 7.3 without paying arms and legs ... got three options , well four, 2006 F-350 w/155k miles, 2007 F-250 w/70k , or a 2008 f-250 w/55k. All are Lariat and 4x4. Of course the differrence is the engine, 08 has 6.4. Oasis on 2006 shows no major mechanicals, which I actually hoped to see head bolt replacement! '07 had no oasis info at all, and 08 ... well didnt run it. Fourth option... go to a 2010 F-150 as now I really only tow 30 ft camper anyway. Ok fifth option .. , wait for the 6.2 ltr gas engine coming to the SD in March. Any advice, input, concerns ... I must trade out before this "unnamed" truck kills me!

Keep looking for a 7.3. Prices are up on them right now so be prepared to wait a while. Out of the 3 you listed I'd say 07.

i have the 08 w/ 6.4 and i love it. of course it doesnt get the mpg that your 7.3 got due to the DPF. my boss had a 06 with the 6.0 and he now has a 08 6.4 as well. he says the 6.4 has a lot more power and is a lot quieter than the 6.0. the 2011 6.7 will be built in mexico and of course will have its share of bugs to be worked out. i pull a 24' dove tail trailer hauling either a 9000 lbs military truck with a snow blade thats not street legal when it has to go to the shop, or a 43 international tractor w/ bush hog and box blade. the 6.4 has no problem pulling them and on a 6% grade hill in town i can hit it running about 60 and topping out at 70 is easly done if i want to. plenty of power at all stock. hope you find the right truck, and hope any info i through out there is helpful...

my concerns

To add to it...my concerns on the options:

a 7.3 is obviously mileage, finding one in clean shape is tough with the mileage you see on lots of them now.

6.0 . . .head bolts, EGR , Oil cooler, tranny? ...

6.4 . . . dont really know what to expect from it, but have noticed how much quieter it is. Dislike the alternator location! They have made a 10 minute repair job a total nightmare! thank goodness it is a rare occurance.

Pulling a 30 foot camper, and about 3 or four times a year pull a gooseneck w/6610 new holland tractor. 10k lbs

camper approx 3000k. . .guessing. pulling the gooseneck could be done with my uncles truck .. is it worth keeping a diesel just to do that?? Cant decide ... love my diesel!

i ask about the camper because my 32' camper is 9000lbs. loaded. 3000 lbs. seems awful light.

Yeah, a 30' camper that's 3000 lbs seems way light. If you can find a 2010 V10 you might go for it. How often do you pull the camper and where (mountains, flats, elevation)?

further research shows it may weigh 5-6k... Fleetwood Prowler no slides. It is not real heavy. My tractor and implements push 12k and it is nowhere near that. Pull Camper to Bristol twice a year, maybe a few campgrounds, hunting grounds in the winter.

My personal opinion: '07 6.0L. Last year before the emissions crap and low miles.

I'm not sure where you are located but here is one you might want to look at; I traded my 2000 F250 SC 2WD 7.3 6 speed manual, 4" stainless exhaust, South Bend ConOFE clutch at 80K, Super Chips tuner and now has 113K miles last November. It is a great truck but I needed to get a new one before I retire. It is located in Middletown, IN.

You dont have to worry about the ToqShift tranny either. Its real nice and strong too. Also I wouldnt hesitate to buy a well maintained 05-07 6.0 with a clean OAISIS. I have a 06 just over 60k on it now, sure its had a few problems but nothing out of the ordinary.

I'll take a guess at the truck you don't want to mention, could it be a toyota? What a big step down from a super duty if it is.

I was thinking one of those bump stop IFS ones....rusty Tundra?

Personally I would rule out the F150. Not because it can't tow it, but you don't want to be in your current position again.

Drive the others a few time if you have to in order to decide. Better drive that 6.4 too.

If you're not scared of that little "have to remove the cab to work on the engine" thing, then I'd suggest you search the 6.4 section for the MPG threads. If it were me I'd be looking at the 6.0.

Question though, how does the price of a low mileage 7.3 compare to the 06 / 07 models? There's still some 7.3's out there with less than 100k (how I'm not sure)

Actually, the reason Ford switched over to the 6.0 was because of emissions crap. The 6.4 just has more of it.
