Sorry for the long post but I am in Afghanistan and can't actually look in the truck and get ideas myself. Well I am going to install some sort of DVD player for the kids but I am not sure which way to go yet. My Ex did not come with the rear dvd player so I need to figure out a way to mount a screen without blocking the rear a/c controls for one and also decide whether I am going to use an all in one deal or DVD player and screen. I thought about getting a screen and seperate player mounted where the rear stereo controls are but I don't know if it will fit and I have also seem to remember reading that removing the controls kills the rear speakers. So where has everybody been mounting monitors and can the rear module be removed without loss or rear audio. Thanks.
A couple of answers:
- removing the rear audio controls will cause the rear pair (3rd row) speakers to stop working. I relocated mine inside the storage compartment since I wasn't going to use it anymore.
- One option is to use seat mounted screens - several on the board have done so and this allows full use of the rear A/C controls. They also do not block the rear view mirror like the roof mounted screens do.
- Not sure there is room inside the rear of the console to install a dvd player - but some headrest mounted screens have the dvd player built-in. Depending on the type the DVD player can either control both screens or some have the ability to be standalone and have each screen play their own media.
Here is a link to my set up that I did. I did take the head unit out as it was a real cheap one and my new on should be here today!! It was a pretty easy job..........https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...installed.html
tdappleman what did you put in the place of the rear controls? I guess I will start looking for headrest screens. I would still like a center screen so everyone can watch and the rear view being blocked doesn't bother me too much because usually we are towing or have so much crap in the back it is useless anyway. Thanks.

I have a blanking plate there now since the weather has been so crappy. The plan is to install a power inverter and A/V inputs for the kid's games.
How many are in your family? My plan is to do the same as tdappleman and then add a big screen for the third row (cheaper than a bunch of individual units). You can get the bigger screens for a decent price, mounting them is the key. I'll do a write-up and review of how my install goes weh the time comes.
To hijack this thread a bit...
With the rear controls, is there any way of completely removing them so that you still retain the rear speakers?
Don't worry about the hijack. Right now there are 2 kids 4 and 6 with one more on the way. I like the idea about a roof screen because I can get one large screen for less than 2 seperate screens. I guess I have more research to do. If I go with 2 screens I see that most people have gone with 7inches. Is this the biggest that fit in the back of the seat?
I asked the same question on the screen size and did some measuring. An 8" likely could fit but it would be tight and they are not easy to find in that size. If you go 9", you would have to mount it lower on the seat so it doesn't overhand the seat back.
I am (regretfully) going to go with 7" screens but really that is the only option we have, short of a ceiling drop down.
Anything over 7" I dont beleive would look good as they would not have perfect fit. Look at my photos to see my 7", you can see I would not want to go any bigger. Guess it would depend on the manufacuer also.
