Anyone Replace Rear A/C controls ?

Anyone try replacing the rear AC controls with an LCD monitor ?

I'm getting tired of setting up the velcro type screen/dvd players behind the front seat each time, so thinking of getting a DVD/Monitor that I can just put where the rear AC controls are instead.

I've seen some all in one units with DVD/screen ( no OEM ) and since I control the rear temp etc.. from the front there really is no need for the controls in the second row.

Anyone try this ? Is there any leads or wires I can tap into up there without having to fish ? I'm assuming not since they probably don't have enough amperage though. I could probably also get away with using alot of the existing mounting surface once I get rid of the ac controls...

Any input ?

I took mine out and put in a rear video screen. No wires up there except for the heat and ac controls. You have to fish the wires, but it's not too difficult

It's not bad to run the wires - be careful with the headliner as it can crease if pulled out of position too far. I used a metal coat hanger which I straightened out, taped my wires to and pushed from the door panel to the center. There are some contours to both the ceiling and the headliner so go slow. I wouldn't tap into the existing wires for anything - just run new power, ground and signal wires and you'll be in much better shape. If you can - try to run power/ground from one side (driver's) and if you have a signal cable run it from the other side (passenger). This separation will help with picture quality and potentially noise being picked up.

Thanks for the info guys ! I'm looking for an ll in one unit with the screen and built in DVD player so that I can keep it pretty simple with the install. The headrests would bee nice too - but a lot more work and $ so the kiddies can settle with one screen - heck that's more than I ever had growing up

I'm looking around online for a unit that's not too big and will fit nicely in the rear top space without looking too out of place or 'hacked' onto the headliner. Most online places don't seem to put too much info when it comes to the actual dimensions so I can figure how they fit to the contours etc...

Anyone got any pics of what theirs look like or links of where they ourchased them ?

Here is another tip:

Move the rear A/C control panel to the front, then you will no longer have the "rear control" setting that the front control has. Just plugs in, works fine, and removes the setting that is useless anyway once you remove the rear control.

I used a Clarion 10" unit OHM1075VD, with the optional mounting shroud SH1075 that can be cut to the contour of the roof. Turned out pretty good. I can put up some pictures if it will help. The main thing is to find one that has a mounting shroud as the roof is not flat there...
