Today my steering column stated binding up in my 78 bronco. It's got a little play in it. I looked at toms bronco parts and jeffs bronco graveyard and didn't see any rebuild kits. Any ideas?
Yeah, there are 2 spots where the column might be failing, either the bearing or the u-joint. You might need to check those, I'm just guessing the setup is the same as on the newer Broncos, so those are the items I've seen. My guess is the bearing, and you'll need a steering wheel extractor for that.
Not much to rebuild there, just extract the old bearing and use it as a sample to get a new one, get a quality part (Timken, Koyo, etc...). And from now on, try not to pull yourself on the truck using the steering wheel, it's usually that (and age) which kills the bearing.
I found the bearing at macsautoparts.com. There are 2 different sizes so measure before you order. You are sure it's in the column though? disconnect from steering box to be certain.
