Steering Column Bearing?

Hey guys. I have a 1995 F150, single cab, two wheel drive that i think the steering column bearing has went out on.

The wheel moves up down left and right as if its pivoting right behind the steering nut. Myquestion is, can individual bearings be replaced easily? Ive found the parts at lmc and all i need.now is a steering wheel puller. Is this an easy job or should the.whole column be replaced?

Thanks

You can replace the bearing. This work was done to my truck several years ago but i watched the whole process, it isn't too hard. you'll have to take out the steering wheel of course.

i wouldnt drive it to long with the bearings out. It can were down the shaft where the bearings sit and then you would have to replace the shaft also.

-----------------------------------------------------------
F4DZ-3517-A .. Lower Steering Column Bearing / Available from Ford.

My steering wheel has "fallen". I can pick it up about 2". It can also be moved to the right & left. Is this similar to what yours is doing?

it sounds like you might have a bracket broke if you can move it that much. I would look under your dash and then wiggle it to see what is loose.

I took the airbag and column trim. Initially It looks like (without pulling the wheel) everything is solidly attached right up to the wheel. I can't see if there's a bracket behind the wheel to hold up the shaft, because the wheel is in the way. Guess I'll have to pull it to what's up, unless anyone else has seen this.

The bracket is under the column. Remove the bolts and the whole thing drops, the steering wheel will rest on the seat.

I'll be able to pull my wheel next week. When I get to it, I'll post back what my problem was. I'm wondering if there's not more than just that bracket behind the wheel.

my wheel is just starting to move maybe an inch of play from top to bottom/ side to side. at times it makes a sound simular to a spring being streched/pulled and wrapped around a pole. i figured F* it ill replace it with a tilt column(since i raised my seat a good solid inch or so). i had an f250 where the coulumn shot the bed. it wasnt to bad to replace. nor was my jeep yj

there is a metal bracket but there is also 2 plastic 'Washers' that slide in groves on the column closer to the wheel. Sometimes the washers break and the column slides down and the only thing holding it is the metal bracket. Just take the bolts out and replace the plastic washers with regular metal ones. Put the column back in place and tighten down

I'm first going to pull the plastic out from in front of the knees. There you can see the 2 bolts that hold up the steering column. You shoul be able to adjust those if they are loose. I feel like the issue I'm having is right behind the wheel, like you said, there's probably a bracket that's broken.

Mine made the same noise when It first started happening, Im still trying to find a steering wheel puller so I can rip it apart.

How can you remove the chrome piece on the ouside of the ignition switch so you can take both plastic covers off? Only the bottom will come off, the chrome piece needs to come off to get the top plastic cover.

Thanks

im not sure,i dont think mine has a chrome peice, and on the f250 i just used the ignition that came with the column, my f150 **** the bed a couple days ago. my clutch fluid leaked all over my clutch and now both tanks are leaking. also noticed during all the climbing in and out of the cab while i was tryin to get it in the garage that my ignition is starting to pull out of the column
