Intermittent wiper switch

Good afternoon FTE,

The dark, rainy and dreary weekend here in Eastern Washington inspires me to pose a question regarding OEM intermittent wipers. Were they available as an option from the factory in '83, and if not in '83 possibly in another model year where the OE wiper switch is next to the headlight switch ? It would be nice, more often than not the windshield goes dry twixt swipes on the low setting, the wipers start to chatter and then I become the intermittent switch. Know what I mean?

Check around in some junkyards, some trucks did have intermittant wipers. The easyst way to tell is the wiper **** will rotate counter clockwise for the intermittant operation, clockwise for normal operation, center off.

You will have to change out the switch and there's the control modual behind it. One thing good about this , its all plug and play! I got all the parts for my 84 F250 ready to install once I get a new cab to house it....

I think up to 89 trucks and Broncos will have them.

Please clarify for me. Can you get intermittent wipers simply by finding a switch and a module? These components will plug into a wiring harness in a truck without intermittent?

Awesome, Hey thanks for the info. I've got a JY run this weekend to get parts for my jeep. I'll be scouting some rigs while I'm there for the switch. There are a s*** load of 80's trucks and bronco's at the pick-n-pull I frequent, to narrow the search would it most likely be found in an XLT or Lariat package?

diggerrigger It sounds to me like you plug the OE wiper motor harness into the module and then the module into the switch. I've seen modules of other manufacturers under the hood between the motor and the switch.

that's almost all there is too it, you also have a ground wire on the switch for the intermit to hook up. they started putting them in in 85.

Good to know, "the why doesn't it work"? probably would have been an issue for me being a bit electrically challenged. Thanks

Based on the P/N it looks like this one is an 1984 part. Got this at Pull and Save in Spokane. The cost was about $6. Your harness just plugs in to this one.
I use a 90* scribe to get the **** of the end. Be sure to look at the Broncos.

I just checked my parts stash in the garage. I have 2 1980 P/N and 1 1984 P/N.

So I would look at 1980 and up.

you can see the ground wire off the side of the case on the switch. this wire is not on the regular switch, and must be hooked up, or the wipers will not work at all

Sweet, I've been out at Pull and Save twice in the last two weeks buying cooling system conversion parts for my Jeep. The last time it rained I thought about checking into an intermittent wiper switch for the Ford but I haven't really thought about it lately since the weather here has been so nice....... until this weekend. Thanks for the tip, it looks like there's a fairly good selection of trucks out there.

They were an option from 80-86 as far as I know, and came on most trucks and broncos with the convenience group or one of those special packages. When I got a new interior for my truck out of an 82 F250,it had intermittent wipers, and it was an XL model truck. It's probably more common in XLT's,but it is in the other trucks too.I have the intermittent wiper setup from the 82 plugged into my truck, but I still have to mount the control module and the ground wire, and then replace my wiper motor before I know if it works or not. When I pulled the interior out of the F250,it still worked,so i'm sure it will.Best of luck on the search.Get lots of good cheap parts if ya can, alot of these trucks can disappear overnight.

I hear ya on that! The JY where I shop has quite a few trucks but at the same time I know I aint the only one looking to do these upgrades. Either the truck will be scavenged of everything I want or like you say it'll have gone to the crusher. Thanks for the info on model year and package level. I almost feel like I should go out tomorrow but I gotta work! Man this job's really cutting into my personal time.

My 83 (XLT) has the intermittent option. Shows from new in the owners manual.

Rockauto has both the switch & module listed, switches from $27 - but they only show OEM modules @ $100 each.

With electrical parts new would be the best way to go. I'm not sure I'm on board for 130.00 although it would probably best. I'll try my luck at the JY. Thanks for the alternate, who knows I may need it.
