i just picked up a sterling and one of my friends said parts are limited and very expensive...im not sure if he has a clue what he is talkin about and i havent had time to look into it, so what do you all think?
I believe lockers and such are alot more expensive than say a d60. As far as over the counter stuff it shouldnt cost much more if any than other stuff. Now correct me if im wrong but isnt gear selection more limited than 44/9/60/70?
I have found the gear selection is more limited than other axles. Same with lockers and LS. I haven't searched for axle shafts. I have had no problems with mine, only problem i have heard repeatedly is occasionally spinning a tube. But that can be fixed with a few strong beads... I haven't really heard of many broken shafts either...
Im happy with mine. I can say when i was pricing gears and lockers, it was about 800 for the rear, i believe that was with a detroit, but dont quote me, it was several months ago.
Alright Dillin....crown in hand I will now answer your questions.
As Paul vaguely mentioned (:flipoff there are two "versions" of a Sterling 10.25. Short pinion and Long pinion. The short pinions are from 89-92 and the longs are from 92.5-98. The abbreviated answer is short pinion gear sets are pretty much not available for ratios above 4.10. The long pinion gears sets are available up through 5.38...maybe higher, not sure. If you have a short pinion axle all you need is a long pinion yoke and the appropriate ratio long pinion gear set.
No big deal.
Sterling parts are basically the same price as comparable D70 parts. Maybe a couple bucks here or there more but nothing major. I wouldnt sell a Sterling to buy a 70 if that makes sense.
Tips/tricks if you rebuild your Sterling.
-use a solid pinion shim from a ford 9" instead of a crush sleeve
-use Dana 70 ring gear bolts instead. The 70 bolts have a shoulder that keep them from backing out under load.
-be careful with the diff cover. Believe it or not its the weak link of the axle. If you can find a wrecked 08-10 Superduty ****** the diff cover off. BLING DADDY!
