Hank, I advertise on CL a lot, and get these responses all the time. After you've been doing it for a while you can pretty much get to recognize them from their very first response, it's usually something like, "Is the item still for sale?" It's always "the item" and they won't go into specifics. For example, I had an ad running for Bumpside doors, I got a response of "Is the item still for sale?" and I sent back saying, "Which one? Do you need just one side or both?" and they ignored that and went on with a response very much like the one you posted above. Sometimes I just ignore them and don't respond further, and sometimes I send them back a very nasty post, depending on my mood and available time.
Just be careful, because now they're even offering to pay you by PayPal which is supposed to be safe, but they've got a way figured around it.
Scammers suck...
Dan,the first response stated "Hi
Get back to me if the item is still Up for sale"
CL is a great tool for both buying and selling, but like anything that becomes that popular, it becomes a major venue for scammers and other slime ***** looking to make a quick buck off of the unwary. Just be alert and don't let yourself become another statistic. I usually post a warning in my ads that reads, "Attention scammers; I have your number. I can usually spot you from the very first post, so don't even waste my time."
This has cut out about 98% of the ******. I still get the occasional one who just didn't read that far down, but most catch it and move on in search of easier prey. It's just too bad that there are so many folks who fall victim to that crap.
Do a Google search on "419 scams", makes for interesting reading. And some guys who are very imaginative (and have more free time than I do!) will play with them. I love the story about the guy who made a scammer join his "church" and paint a big red circle on his chest to prove that he'd done so, and strung him along for weeks. It was great!

well I just learned why I don't get such good responses when I answer ads on craigslist, normally my first question is "is this item still for sale?"
I do also ask pertinent information also.
I have never sold anything on craigslist so I have never dealt with the scammers!
so on that note how is the best way to answer an ad?
and what about answering an ad with your phone number in the e mail?

I always ask if the item is still for sale as well, but on kijiji, I don't use craigslist
No, not every one of them is a scam, but many are. I usually want to know if the item is still for sale as well, since so many folks don't bother to take their ads down after selling the item. See, it's tough to get away from that word, "item"!
I try to personalize my response, something like, "Hi, I was wondering if the (insert name of the item here) is still for sale, and if so, where and when can I see it? I have cash in hand and no BS. If you want, you can call me at (insert phone # here)
Thanks,
-Dan"
This helps to show that I'm not a scammer by asking to see the item in person and telling them I have cash in hand, and showing them a phone number with a local area code helps. If they don't respond, then they've probably already sold it.
