thats correct NWBronco. if you have all the parts cleand up and ready to go and know how to weld perhaps the job could be done in a weekend with some help. most take a week at least and run about 2k total with the cost of the front diff and getting it to spec

started taking the front end apart. got to the right side axle shafts and can't figure it out. i've looked in the manual and at online write-ups. everything says i'm supposed to remove the clamps and rubber boot. the thing is i don't have any clamps connecting the two axles. here's what i'm looking at.

I would think so. If my memory serves me. Will the axles simply not come out of the diff?

the left one yes. the right one no. there's a 'c' clip inside, but the outer right axle i thought should just come apart from the inner after the clamps are removed.

Agreed. The passenger side inner is secured by c-clip. The outer should slide right out of the splined end of the u-joint, Is there any play in it at all? May be rusted together. pop it lightly with a hammer and see if it comes apart. Those boots are the worst water collectors I have ever seen.

it does move in and out about an inch, but won't come all the way out. tried to spray it down with wd40, but didn't do anything. i'll work on it some more tomorrow. good thing i have multiple vehicles. one of my other cars is in the body shop

Also... i wouldn't just trust the tags (in trucks this old, pinion and rings could have been swapped), ask the PO to see if they remember the gearing those trannies had, just to be safe.

PO previous owner. And Encho is a post or two behind. He's referencing the axles you bought/are buying earlier. You went from getting the replacements to removing the Dana 44 axleshaft in the same thread, so it happens. I've done it myself.

my bad. the guy ended up not being able to drive here and sold the other axles. the PO is a buddy of mine and never even used the truck. it was parked in his back yard for about 5 years when he gave it to me.
