After installing my boost gauge I can not believe the readings ( crap ) I am not sure what its supposed to be reading but when I am cruising through town about 1500- 2000 RPM I get boost readings of 2-6 if I step on it, it raises up to 8-12 and at a constant speed on a flat road it will actually drop to 0 and or fluctuates 0-4. I tried to do the soap bubble test and could not see much of a problem ( I think I have to have someone hold the throttle down to get more press.). All the hoses and boots look OK. Isn't there a MAP sensor?? could this be bad?? What tells the engine to build boost??

You need to get the engine under load to get your true readings. Yours doesn't sound too far off how it should be. Cruzing down the road at about 2300 you should have about 3-5 lbs of boost, if go down even the slightest downhill it will drop to 0. If you start climbing so shoudl the boost gauge. Pegged in third or fourth, depending on the tranny, going up a hill should give you your max boost. Should be 15+ depending on what you have done to the truck.
An example in my truck.
this is wide open throttle through all the gears.
1st 10 psi
2nd 14 psi
3rd 17 psi
4th 20-21 psi
5th not sure, i am going way over the speed limit by then.
jsut on the highway at 2k im pumping out 3lbs of boost on stock and it will hit 10psi with out an issue just touching the trottle and hits 20psi on a wot on stock. you deff got an issue somewere, check the mapsensor line for a \clog. its on the left bottom of the ypipe you cant miss it. if not then check the up pipes in the back up the motor for soot around the collectors.
usually if the up-pipes are leaking there will be fumes in the cab while idling from the vents and soot on the firewall behind the turbo.
your boost numbers sound ok, your peak boost sounds low but to properly test it you need to be in 3rd or 4th gear and go wide open to the limiter. your peak boost reading will be between 3000 and 3400 rpm.
these turbos are large on our trucks and not the "traditional" wastegated turbo that will build 10-15 lbs of boost at all times as soon as you touch the throttle. our boost readings are linear with rpm and load.
OK, I know there is no leaks in up pipes. I have a 5 spd and I have never taken it to those RPM's I have 5.13 gears in it and it rapps up fast but I keep thinking I will blow it up if I take it to 3000 to 3400. Will It??? I thought I am hard on the motor doing 2500 down the freeway (Thats 65 Mph for me) for long periods of time . The gears was a mistake ( I was supposed to be running 42" tires) and I can not have them changed yet.
I personaly dont see the point in going past 3k. The peak power is right at that I believe, so its pointless to go much past it. Just more wear on the engine.
Is that the truck you are talking about in the pic? Nice truck, I have the identical one to that. Just with-out the lift. Dang hard to find a tailgate that matches that color.
Blue, Yes that is the truck in the pic. I know it is hard to find parts that color, luckily I don't need any. It was hard enough to find the interior spray paint color ( dark red) for the new pillar pod.

Ah, nice truck. Is that the maroon color? It is hard to tell in the pic. I guess they are not identical. Mine has the grey interior. Its a good looking truck!
