I saw a thread about this on here, but it had like 8 pages and thought I would start another since the other one kinda went off subject. I have a 2002 Explorer(new body style). I can go into 4X4 high with no problems, but when I choose 4X4 low, the light on the button just flashes for a few seconds and then goes off.
Would you thing it would be the control module or the motor just not engaging into low.
To put it in 4Lo you DO stop and shift to neutral before selecting 4Lo don't you?
If so then corrosion/oxidation on the 4WD shift control module may be the issue. Do the unplug/plug thing a couple of times to see if it helps. Module could be bad though.
If you can find a shop with a scanner capable of reading the transmission codes it might save you a lot of guessing/spending. The Ford manual diagnosis is dependent on the DTC's being read.
I can't remember if my foot was on the brake or not....I'm sure it was in neutral, but can't remember in park......Is that the critiria for switching into 4X4 low.....must be in neutral with your foot on the brake? Thanks in advance for all your help.
