89 4x4 high/low Shifting problem

I just bought a 89 f-150 5.0, 4x4. When I try to select 4x4 High, it is really tight. I can't even get it to go into 4x4 low gear. The previous owner said, "yes the 4x4 was a little tight to get into." Would this be the shifter, transfer case or some kind of linkage adjustment? Any quick help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advanced.

sounds like transfer case. You cant adjust the linkage that I know of and it shouldnt be the shifter.....does it grind a little?

the shifter is most likely bound up. it is a standard problem with trucks that do not see much 4X4 use.

get up under it with a can of P B Blaster and spray it down, then work it. it took me a few weeks to get my 88 working again after it sat for 3 years with a blown trans/transfer case

You may try first cleaning up the linkage. It sits out in the open and has probably gotten very little use. Spray the linkage with a good penetrant oil and work the lever. It should free up.

Rock on!! I'll try the PB Blast. That stuff is great! Thanks for the quick response guys!!!.
Nighthawk: It doesn't grind at all. Just really tight to use. I'm just use to my old truck being to easy to use. Also my lockouts were a lot easyer to use too. These, you have to really have a good grip on them, without gloves I've learned.

sounds like you might need to take off the hubs and re-grease em too maybe. If it doesnt grind then its probably just rusty, that PB should work greatly

here is a little tool for ya to make gravydude. it will help with locking the hubs while wearing gloves in the winter.
it is made out of 1 inch PVC pipe and a PVC "T" . cut a slot into the end of the pipe to fit over the hub. then you can wear a big thick pair of gloves, and use the tool to key the hubs locked, or unlocked. total cost to make is about $3, and 15 minutes of time

...just remember that 4x4 low, you have to have the transmission in neutral to move the lever into 4x4 low...

If you are pulling the lever sideways (or whatever direction that model is set up for) as you should and it still doesn't work, the penetrating oil is your friend and savior. After you get it loose, stay on top of it with WD40 or something. Somebody on here installed a grease fitting if I remember right. As for your hubs, you're probably long overdue for a service. Mine lock/unlock with two fingertips. You'll probably pull the caps and find everything rusted or glazed over real good.

Have fun.

I have recently heard bad things about WD40 being too abrasize for certain things and causing damage. If you are looking for a good spray on lubrication I have heard great things about White Grease.

I've never heard the war stories about WD40, but white grease would be the better choice. I haven't seen it in 20 years, but if I remember right, it sticks to what you spray it on (???)

white lithium grease is not a good choice, cause just as it sticks to anything it touches, anything that touches it sticks to it also. a good penetrating oil like PB Blaster is a much better choice.

and WD40 IS NOT a penetration oil. it is a water displacing solvent, and will wash off with water.

Thanks TJC Trans!!! That is a nice little jig! So I sprayed it down last night, it worked great.

Depotops: Yeah, I figured out that you have to have it in neutral for 4x4 low the hard way. I'm use to manual trans.....

Thanks Guys!!! I'll be back with more questions, this truck is filled full of questions.
