Gear decision

Regearing my truck. 05 with 5.4 an 37" tires. I do mostly city driving with the occasional trip a few times a month as well as towing 8,000lb TT. Im stuck between 4.56 and 4.88 what do you guys think? Ive been swaying back and forth....hoping somebody has some input/advice for me

A Texan asking "why so much/big"?
Some things not right there.

Johan,

I'm not a gear expert, but if I had to choose one the two options it would depend on what the existing gears are in there now.

3.73s I would probably go with 4.56s. 4.10 I would probably go with 4.88.

This is a very debatable subject. I really depends on your ultimate goal.

Give your post a little time to stew and I'm sure you'll get several replies soon.

When I get around to having lockers installed I'm convinced I'll be going to go with 4.56 gears. It seems to be a decent upper mid-range choice from 3.73s. 4.30s would probably be ok for me, but I do want a little more jump off the line and more importanly a good crawl speed for offroad trails. I have a feeling 4.88s would be too much of a jump for me since I do have the truck on the highway a couple times a year. It's clear the 4.56 gears will make a noticable difference from 3.73s and I'm sure I'm going to be happy with them after all the research I've done on the subject here and talking with a couple local porformance shops.

It really is an individual personal decision. You should take the time to find as many posts here on FTE and search the net on the subject. Do lots of lurking at forums and reading and I'm sure you'll be able to make an informed decision when the time comes for you to make the purchase.

Well, I put 4.30's in my truck with a 33" tire and it runs 65 at 2200rpms so I would think with a 37" that a 4.56 would not be enough gear.

IMO go with the 4.88's

I get it now. You already had the job booked and the axle shop had the parts ordered. You where just trying to justify your previously made decision.

which gears?

howdy, looken for some advice. gonna upgrade the '08 f350 to a 450. need the pulling capacity for a 42' 20000lb+ fifthwheel I am open to look at 2008-2011 models. been searching all the options for a couple days now. appears most of the '08's had 4.88 gears, the '09's and 10's have 4.30 gears. would love everyones opinion on if there is significant fuel milage differences between the two.. and of course who knows with the 2011,s.... not quite a believer that they can cut down the axles etc and keep the same towing capacity, but thats another subject.. will be towing freeway mostly. so, gpm vs towability... any suggestions? thanks, Cliff

Glad you got it sorted out. Lots of snap off the line now so it should be fun to drive around town and crawling up the steeper mountains trails.

With 38's i would probably also consider 4.56, but definitely at least 4.30. re: Gears)
It was a post someone thought was funny and pointed it out to me.
