Gears :)

I called Austin Drive Train today to get my pricing on the gears.. Looking at either flipping from the 4.5" Hanger to a 6" Suspension, or possibly just adding minipacks to bring me from 4.5 to 6.5".. Marty has a truck he did that to and it looks pretty nice.. Course that would push me to 38" Toyo Open Country MTs next go round.. So I'm deciding whether I should go with 4.10 or 4.30.. Want to try and get my ratio pretty close to the 3.73 ratio.. Dont want my tac at 3k on the highway running 70 in 5th gear..

Cost tho, he said would be between 1500-1700 depending on what ratio I do.. Not bad, lot cheaper then I expected!

You will not have to worry about high rpms with 38s. I have 35s and 4.10s and only push 2200 rpm at 70 mph. The larger the tire the lower the rpms will be.

I got 3.73 and 35s and she sits at 2000 rpms at 70.. Wonder why yours is 200rpms higher then mine.. How's your take off on the 4.10s? Do you think I should go 4.10 or 4.30s on 38's?

Mine is 200 rpm higher because I have lower gears than you. I would go 4.30 with the 38s.

Storm.
Use this link below as a good tool to calculate tire size vs. gear size.

4.10 to 4.30 is roughly 5%. 2000 * 5% = 100 rpm. I cough the rest up to the accuracy of the guage. IIRC OD from 4r100 and TS is pretty close if not the same.

I would say to go with at least 4.30's. I have 4.30's with 35" Extreme A/T's and think it is a good match.

If you are going to 38" tires, you have to factor in the extra wind resistance from going higher and having more surface area from the tires while travelling 70 mph down the highway.

If you were going to do alot of towing, I would suggest 4.56 for the power.

I will have a newer engine soon that will be pushing some HP.. basically this is how I see it.. 4.10s on stock F250 will give us some serious off the line jump.. I want to get that same feeling but with 38's.. Not looking to drag race, but at same token I dont want to strain the engine etc..

With 38's i would probably also consider 4.56, but definitely at least 4.30.

4.56's with 38's would save a lot of wear on your transmission.

I would say 4.30 is the MINIMUM you should run with 38s. 4.56 is more appropriate IMO.

If you are deciding between 4.10s and 4.30s......4.30s all the way.

I run 4.56s with 38s.

Here's a chart I made up that will show what rpms you'll push at 70mph.....your stock tires were 31.6":

I'm not much a gear guy.. What is your true speed on your 4.56 and 38s? It shows damn near 3k and you doing 85.. Are you really doing 85? Or no..

Based on your chart it says that

38...............4.56....................1976

Is what I'm trying to do is keep 70mph close to 2k? as stock was.. Do I need to go to 4.88.. How does your run with the 4.56? Does it still have some power to move or do you feel like a big slug just crawling? I dont want big tires, aggressive stance but no ***** under the wheels.. Right now shes pretty damn quick on 35's and 3.73.. I kinda like to keep the same..

As for tranny, she's going to be beefed up before I even throw these on..

That is my real speed....I run a Superlift truspeed to correct my speedo.

I lifted off the throttle for a second when I took the pic. At 90mph it's ~2750rpms.
I've pinned the speedo plenty of times and I still have some room before the redline.

You don't want 4.88s unless you plan on 40-41s.

I still have plenty of get up and go....and often break the tires loose (in the economy setting) if I have to get on the truck hard after taking a turn. With the stock trans it would break the tires loose of the line, 1-2 shift and 3-4 shift. Now with the BTS it won't break the tires loose, but that's because it's doing a better job of transfering the power to the ground.

4.30s or 4.56s would be my recommendation for 38s.
