i have a 1966 f350 with a flat bed i use for my farm truck , what i want to do is get rid of the straight axle and put in one from a 1990's super duty with 8 lugs hubs and no king pins, was wondering if anybody has tried this and would it work. i have not been able to locate a 90's to measure the spring perches. the reason for this is the rims are 6 lugs and split rims, the rear axle should be easy its a dana 60 with six lug hubs im hoping a newer dana 60 has the same hubs just 8 lugs and info would be very helpful.
A F350 would not have a dana 60 unless it is a light duty model. They usualy used dana 70 or other makes of axle. You could have a set of hubs made for them that would work however.
The front axle issue would be easier solved by not changing it unless somthing is severely wrong. Are the king pin bushings shot? They make oversize bushings to have pressed in with new pins. If you have oversize pins and are maxed out I would take it to a shop that rebuilds semi axles or even a well equiped blacksmith shop. they can make and install new bushings for you.
One thing if you have them do this make them broach a lube groove inline with the zerk about 3/4 the bushing length. This will keep this from happening as quickly.
If you must swap axles.......The perches can be moved with some skilled welding and layout. The rim to rim spacing is more crucial, or your vehicle will track improperly.
the rear end is a dana 60 , i know this from changing the gasket in the diff. the reason i want to change everything to 8 lug is that the rims are SPLIT RIM VERY HARD TO FIND SOMEONE TO DO THE TIRE WORK and they are un safe . i dont' think you can have a hub made, so i want to know if a newer dana 60 hub would fitand would a 1990s model super duty straight axle would fit. i want to get rid of the split rims every thing else is fine
Ok dana 60 it is. Try any 1960-1996 F250. Up to 1980 they will be a full floating job. After 80 You have to find an HD model truck to get a full floating rearend.
Old thread, but figured I could add some information for anyone searching.
The 1987+ Ford Super Duty trucks do use a straight I-Beam front axle. No, they are not 8 lug. They are a 10 lug hub which runs a 16" wheel. I don't think it would work without serious steering modifications because the 80's trucks steering box is on the front of the frame. The 61-66 F350's steering box is on the inside of the frame right at the fire wall.
Also, the rear axle is a Dana 70 which uses the 6 lug pattern. Dana 60's were found in 3/4 tons are ran the 8 lug pattern.
I don't know what the power steering box is like on a F100/F250 2wd, but if someone did go this route for making the front I-Beam work, they would get the added benefit of the matching 10 lug rear axle. Since the Cab and Chassis trucks all run a 34" ride rear frame, it should be pretty close for the springs to bolt up? The rear 10 lug axle uses disc brakes.
