I've got an 03 6.0 right now, hasn't been super reliable, despite my meticulous maintenance schedule.. I'm looking for something newer, and under warranty, but i'm comfortable with the 6.0 and i know it well..
My big questions are, are there modifications to 6.4 that i can due to improve the horrendous fuel mileage without voiding warranty. And, is the 6.4 reallly a better engine than the 6.0? Should i just wait for the 2011?
The 6.4 is a strong motor that is built to work but yes the MPG are less than desirable in stock form. As of now you can't do any engine or exhaust mods without voiding your warranty. You so much as change the exhaust tip on a 6.4 and they can void your warranty. If the mileage scares you that much and the warranty is a real issue then I would suggest waiting for a 6.7 but I would wait until at least a 2012 6.7 so that the first couple batches of bugs can be worked out. Just my opinion.
I agree with Brandon's statement. The 6.4 to me has proven great. I am happy with the MPG's but then I came from a 06 with a 5.4.
With the more modern oil burners you need to look at your use of the truck too. If it is going to be a lot of city driving then a gasser will be better.
Emissions stuff does not work well with city driving so consider that issue as well. Personally if you can hold off till MY12 then I would wait.
If you need it now then I would buy one again right now if I wanted it.
Yep! I agree with Brandon and Senix. The 6.4 is one stout engine. I also don't think I'd put my money in a 6.7 until it's proven. I think there remain a lot of unanswered questions about the SCR/Urea technology.
Warranty is void if you mod it. Mine is factory stock and the only problem with that, if one considers it to be one, is the fuel economy. But then, if you're buying a heavy pickup you're not expecting great fuel economy anyway.
I agree with everyone would like to add that you could take a chance on the warranty like I am doing as I run a dpf delete but return it to stock if i need warranty work. So far i've had no issues by doing this but there is always a chance. I'm also easy on my truck and only use it for towing and driving. No racing etc so taking out a tranny or engine due to hard driving are low risk for me. Also, its a bit of a hassle to change back and forth as it takes about 45min-1 hour to change and you need to get under the truck obviously to change stuff out. Some people are in to this kind of stuff then others don't like to fool with it and take it to a side mechanic but they normally will charge $50 or so for each change out. The advantages to a dpf delete are 2-3 mpg improvement and you remove the chance of fuel slipping by the rings and getting into the crankcase. You also lower your EGT's which also helps your engine over the long haul. I only run the 75hp tune which works well for my truck. Basically i now get 17-20 depending on speed and wind. Normally driving 70mph i get about 18mpg with no load, no wind, and on flat ground. Lower that to 55-60mph and i can touch 20mpg.
I get about 15mpg now, 90% of my driving is highway.
That's not great for 90% highway driving. Do you drive fast?
I just made the switch a couple of weeks ago from a 01 7.3 to an 08 6.4 and I have been really happy so far. I have been getting just under 14 mpg with mixed city and highway driving, mainly city driving. That is about 1-2 mpg less than I got with my 7.3 with the same type of driving. The mpg won't really bother me as long as it stays around the same mark. I plan to tune mine in the near future anyway. The truck is soooooooo much nicer than my other one was though, so that kind of outweighs the small mpg decrease that I have gotten.

I bought a 2010 the end of December
many on here are going to tell you how heavy the truck is and how it is built for work so it shouldn't get "good" fuel economy
It is sad in 2010 that a new diesel has a hard time getting 12-13 MPG
I was going to get rid of this truck and told my dealer that and he said to add a program
I added the Hyper Tech and it added 3 MPG and added a lot of power
Those that tell you this truck has a lot of power in stock form don't understand power to me it is under powered
The program as I said added 3 MPG and a lot of get up and go
My truck retailed for over 56K
I dont work this truck and don't beat on it I hope that there wont be any issues that need serious warranty again the dealer said he would take care of it
Lets hope he will
Now I want to say this is a beautiful truck
It rides great for a 1 ton
And I am proud to be seen in it
But the MPG are horrible and shame on Ford for not working on it more
I am sue they were putting all there money into the 2011 motor
Think before you buy....
What do you guys think about the 6.7 mileage? Based on what I'm reading here it sounds like the mileage has probably killed a lot of 6.4 sales for Ford. BTW I just bought my 2010 F350 and went with the 2010 because Ford is killing the manual tranny in 2011. What a shame!
hey smoky i noticed your from edmonton i was talking to the boys at nadp about the 6.4l and they told me that a lot of dealers in the area are so sick of the complaints about the horrible fuel mileage that they are telling them to delete there dpf and they will still honour warranty i dont know this for sure but it might be worth calling nadp and asking them about it

Man that would be a ballsy move on the dealerships part!
As far as the 6.0 vs the 6.4. There is no comparison hands down. The 6.4 is better in every way. I had both the 6.0 and 6.4 tuned with Spartan tunes. From a power and fuel mileage standpoint the 6.4 is king(in tuned form). Don't get me wrong, I loved the whistle from the 6.0... there was no exhaust note that will ever sound that good in my opinion. The 6.4 is just much more refined than the 6.0. It is quieter, way more power, smoother riding, better power curves, less lag and better response at every RPM. Both motors do tremendous amounts of work, however coming from a trouble ridden 6.0, the 6.4 was a huge step in the right direction.
Total agreement here. My '08 will clock 130,000 miles in the next month. 6.4 has been solid and towed my trailers all those miles without any complaint from me.
My big issue is, do I run it to 200K or get a 6.7 for the MPG they are claiming?
You got that right as these trucks are impressive. Its amazing to see a chevy or dodge guy go for a ride in these trucks for the first time and get their reaction. Its almost like "so this is what a real truck looks like"or "damn did i make a mistake". I love it everytime it happens. In my opionion the GM's have good power stock and are fast off the line, however, when it comes to towing something heavy they just don't even compare. I think this is due to the IDF suspension and the fact their trucks are so much lighter in weight.
