Does anyone take the Ex offroad?
The Ex, from what I can determine, is not a rock crawler. It may do "ok" in the rocks if properly outfitted, and obviously can hold it's own in mud, snow and water.
For any serious crawling, I'll take a Jeep, and FJ40 Landcruiser or a specifically designed rock rig

The nice thing about it, as the last poster said, the Ex will get you AND your rock rig (hunting truck/beater-dedicated mud truck, etc) there and back and as the first poster impllied, in total comfort

FWIW, I own an 89 FJ62 Landcruiser. The truck weighs about 6k, has a moderate lift thanks to OME, and 33" Goodyear Kevlar belted tires.
It's cavernous on the inside, can haul (inside) up to 5 people without the 3rd row seating, 8 with it, in relative comfort, and has never left me stranded due to weather or terrain.
Down side?
Doesn't have the towing capacity, and moreso, the necessary braking capacity, to tow what I need to tow on occasion.
With the length being what it is, it get's a little squirrely when trying to stop, quickly or otherwise

I've about decided to sell it, buy an Ex to do the work I need to do (pull boats, haul vehicle trailers, etc), and buy an FJ40 to run around town and play in the woods

Nice short wheelbase, tons of low end, and stubby for those tight places
Like someone else alluded to:
The right tools for the right job
The Ex and the Bronco getting ready for our local St. Patrick's day parade.
with the side eating in the rear we could get 9 or 10 in there

that thing could barely get out of it's way....
but could climb a tree and NEVER broke... no matter what crap this young punk did to it !!!
And have had 4 or 5 jeeps l the way from a cj5 to 5.9 limited....
But to me the Ex is a more versatile vehicle and MUCH softer on my softer sides

I got this thing for a song and used it for a DD for a long time.
9.5 MPG regardless of on/off road or how I drove it.
Slow as heck but would pull a house of it's foundation

Back in the day (about the same time you were in Iran) I owned another FJ, an FJ40 (looks like a Jeep on seroids).
Again, great rig for what it was designed for.
But like you said, would beat my body to death.
Now days they companies have developed lift sets for them that are softer and provide much more articuilation.
Down side ther FJ40? 4 people max and without an engine swap, it's going to be slow!
If my FJ62 (wagon) could pull heavy loads "safely", I'd not be considering an Ex.
But since it's going to be used primarily for work (rescue team business) and on occasion, some family get away time (I have a 4 year old grandaughter that loves my LC so I'll talke her in it and I don't do any hard wheeling anymore), the Ex will fit my purposes much better

More people, more comfort, 4wd, towing capacity, stopping ability...yeah, that's gonna about do it

Looked at a couple of duallys (Dodge) and an F250-350 yesterday, but the Ex still wins in personnel transport
)So, unless we can find a charitable donor (company that needs a write off, etc-this is a non-profit rescue team), I'm going to have to sell the FJ62 first then purchase the EX.
I'll look for another FJ40 later

Everyone have a happy & Safe Memorial Day weekend!!!
Semper Paratus!!!!!!
The Excursion is heavy, long, wide, and with a decent large tire it will track like a tank. Can the Excursion handle basic off road tasks? Absolutely, but there are better smaller vehicles to go places the mighty X cannot. As stated earlier, the right tool for the job.
Mine gets my crawler to the trails in comfort. We trailered it 4,000 miles round trip to Moab, Ut and it performed like a champ. It spanked the Rockies like a spoiled brat.
A few pics.

In the Rockies.

And of course, the crawler.

Sending you a PM!! We've never been to Moab, etc and would really appreciate some advice/recommendations.
Count me in!!
I would love to try some novice trail at the badlands in indiana
