About twice a month lately my truck will just crank and crank for about a minute before it fires up. I mean it doesnt even stumble or attempt to fire until its good and ready. And sometimes when it does finally fire up it may have a high idle for a few seconds.
In the past its always fired up immediately. Its a 2000 V10 with 55k mi. It runs great otherwise and does not trigger any check engine codes.
Ive kept on top of the maint and put a new fuel filter and plugs in at maybe 10k mi ago.
Luckily I have a new battery so I havent been stranded yet, but it scares me sometimes that I may be.
What would you all suggest that I check out? Or what is a common cause for this on these engines specifically?
Well that rules out IAC I would think. Does it only start hard after it's been sitting? What about once it starts does it fire right off or does it still start hard?
I have a 2000 F250 V10, with 35,000 miles. Sometimes it starts first thing in the morning, sometimes not. It always cranks over but it does not always start? When it won't start, it won't start. I can crank it over until the battery goes dead and it just won't start. The next day I can go out and it fires right up? When it does start if fires right up and runs very well. I can turn it off and then start it repeatedly with no problems. I think I may have a loose wire somewhere or maybe a bad coil?
Anyone else have or hear of a similiar problem.
Thanks.
Check the fuel rail schraider valve for pressure next time it wont start. Could be the fuel pump going out, mine acted up intermittantly for about a month before it finally quit for good.
The truck is originally from Arizona. It was my fathers and it sat for 6 months in his garage. I checked the receipts, the fuel pump was replaced in January 2004. The truck had 19,000 on it.
I guess fuel pumps don't last very long in fords.
I store the truck after deer season, from mid Dec. to mid April.
How do I check out the fuel rail schraider valve?
Know anyone that wants a truck?
I need a smaller 4 wheel drive here in NY.
Actually, fuel pumps DO last a long time in Fords. The problem is whenever something doesn't start up right away, a typical shop/dealer will change out the fuel pump first thing instead of chasing the problem.
And, no selling in the forums. Check out the Marketplace.
I also have a 2000 f250 V10 and it's been doing the same thing for about 3 months. It will crank over for a long time and finally it would start and now it needs a shot of starter fluid to get it going when it acts up. It's been to the dealer 3 times for this problem and they can not find anything wrong with the truck. No codes or anyhting. They tried " Heat Soaking" But Nothing. They want me to leave it with them in hopes it will do it for them but leaving my truck for a week or more with a dealer is like handing over my favorite hat and we all know you don't mess with a guys hat.
Any suggestions
Fuel injector cleaner, a tank of high test, and starting it every day did the trick for me. I've had no problems since, and sometimes I don't drive it for a week or more. I had about 1/3 tank of gas when I added the whole bottle of fuel injector cleaner. Ran it til almost empty, then filled up with high test. It took awhile, but no problems since.
Good luck, hope this helps.

Ran good all summer until a couple of weeks ago, I had not been driving it.
It wouldn't start one morning but it did the next and I added more fuel injector cleaner. Been running since.
I don't know if it's coincidence or not.
I also read it could be a short in the wiring harness for power train control module or a sticking idle air control valve.
