My water pump on my 03 F250 7.3 diesel started leaking earlier in the week, so I changed it out, put a new 192* theromstat, with gaskets and housing, all new hoses. The flats on the brass temp sensor were messed up so I decided to get a new one of those too. Well after all was put back to get and the coolant was servised up. I fired the truck up and let it idle to get warmed up and start working the air bubbles out after about 7 or 8 minute the temp gauge shot all the way up to H, and has been there ever since. I shut the truck off and left it to cool down over night, it sat for close to 18 hours, until the next afternoon. I flipped the key on, didn't start the truck, and the temp gauge went straight to HOT again. O'Reilly's gave me temp sensor part number WT763, that what is installed on my water pump now.
So, either put the old one back in and see if the problem persists or get out the meter and compare the resistances of the two sensors at ambient temp.
I would say that if the engine was stone cold, and the temp gauge went to its upper limit, the sending unit you installed is either the wrong one, or it is defective. Put the old one back in and see what readings you get. The hex being messed up usually won't affect it, and who is looking at it anyway---besides you.
When the needle goes to the end on cold morning, that means the sensor is shorted, or there is short in the wire.
Start troubleshooting with pulling the plug from the sensor.
They gave me the wrong sensor. There was 2 different part numbers listed for the truck, when I bought it the guy didn't even mention that, and just sold me the cheaper of the 2.... I got the correct one installed and everything is working as advertised!
