I have a 1990 F250 with a 460 thats running a little too hot for this current heat wave. It has 162, 900 miles on it. I have a Sunpro temp gauge thats telling me the temps. I flushed the coolant, put in a additive, ran it for a few days then flushed that out. It had a 160 degree thermostat in it and in these high temps it would run 190 to 220. I did a little research and found out the EFI engines like to run at 195, so I put in 195 thermostat and new antifreeze. Now its running 210 down the freeway empty and 230-240 sitting still.
It has a Dual Flexalite Fan system thats either on or off, and both fans are working, I can see them pulling on my ammeter.
The radiator was replaced a year or two ago, hoses all look to be in good shape, water pump looks like its been replaced in the last couple of years, its a different shade of rust than the rest of the engine. It looks pretty new, 2 core aluminum.
Any ideas? I'm told this is a sign the engine is ready to go, but its not burning oil, missing or leaking anywhere. Oil smells clean, I just changed it. Could it be the temp sensor has been removed and my sunpro is hooked in where the factory temp sensor would go? Does this old of a truck care what temp the engine is? I read something about it in another thread a long time ago. Also anything after 200 degrees and that engine isnt starting, and its a pretty new battery. I'm told 460's dont like to start hot.
It does not have a factory fan pulling air through a shroud, the previous owner put a body lift on it and the shroud wasnt right, so instead of moving it they pulled everything off and put on the dual flexalite. It worked great until about 2 weeks ago. I used to tow heavy loads of firewood and never saw the truck get apast 190.
