What thread size is the coolant plug near the water pump?

Hi all, I've got a coolant temp gauge. Had a quick look - started pulling the coolant plug out near the water pump. Noticed straight away that the thread was NOT 1/8" NPT - so my coolant temp sender was never going to fit.

I need an adapter, but which one? Sensor is 1/8" NPT , I suspect the coolant plug is M14 x ???

Thanks for the info! So far I have EGT, tranny temp, boost, engine oil temp, and fuel pressure fitted. I got the fuel pressure sender adapter from Riff Raff, but cant see any coolant sensor adapters listed anywhere!

I just found this on Diesel Manor:

Install Pictures

7.3L Ford Powerstroke Motor
This port in the side of the water pump housing it plugged with a 5/16" square drive 3/8"NPT plug. Simply remove the plug and install a 3/8"NPT to 1/8"NPT adapter and screw in the sender. On this 2000 Ford 7.3L Powerstroke we are installing the water temp sender in a "T". This is due to the customer's installation of an aftermarket coolant filter requiring a hose connection.

So 3/8" NPT is the one?

If I recall correctly, it is 3/8" NPT.

Anyone know where to get a 5/16" square drive? I'm trying to get my plug out to install a coolant filter. Do you have to make it?

My waterpump was new, last spring, so I'm hoping it wont be too tight.

Yea hopefully your will come right out. I kinda just chalked mine up to my kinda luck. I did find out there is enough meat in the hole to run a tap in, cause my plug brought a couple threads with it. Like I said my kinda luck, yours will probably come right out.

You should be able to get a 5/16 square drive or 8 point socket (both will work) from Snap On or Mac Tools. If you see one of those tool trucks parked somewhere just hop on and tell them what you need.

I just realised you guys are talking about an Outee 5/16" square drive. I have an Inee square drive recess and the 3/8 or 1/4 doesn't fit. Has anyone else came acros this?

A short half-inch bolt and a bench grinder can be your friends.

That's a good idea there Pop. I was gonna suggest a inch or so of 5/16 square stock.
