This is my rig, all 20,520 lbs of it and I do fine. Flat interstate driving is fine at 60-65mph, if I get into a lot of ups and downs due to overpasses, I'll just take it out of overdrive. If you have the 4R100 tranny, taking it out or overdrive will give a final drive ratio of 5.32.
Divide 3.73 by .7 which is what the OD ratio is.
So, 3.73 / .7 is 5.32
And that's only if you're running at highway speeds. General all-around acceleration will still be the same
never mind....... found the right calculator..... it was alittle more involved, buy yes i see what your saying. basicaly you're running the same rpm's in (D) as you would be in (OD) with a gear ratio of about 5.38......2500 rpm's.
if you had a 31" tire with a 5.38 rear end ratio you'd be running at about 2500 rpm's in (OD) at 60mph
with a 31" tire with 3.73's running in (D) your running 2500 rpm's at 60 mph. i'm tracking with ya now........
on the 4R100 3rd gear (D) is 1.00:1 ratio, OD is .71..... if you're driving in (D) then your at a 1:1 ratio to your rear end. if your running in (D) then your effective ratio to the ground isn't 5.32..... in (OD) at .71:1 with 3.73 gears, your looking at a 2.65:1 final drive, 1:1 (OD) will be a final drive of what ever your rear end is.
Oh yeah, you are correct. I guess my comparison was meant to be between the 5.32 rear end in OD vs. the 3.73 in D.
Late into this but I have a 2000 ext. cab shortbox 4x4 with 4.30 gears that weighs out at 7200 with the V10. I pulled a fiver weighing 13k over mountains with no problems. Truck is not tricked out. I now have a 16k trailer that I hauled to a permanent site in the rockies with no problem and never dropped below 50 mph up an 8 percent grade

Nice to meet another Illinois tower - I'm hauling a Jayco Eagle 320RLDS.
I didn't quite follow what you are using to monito the tranny temp? Do you have a link to the kit?
I'm towing close to 10k with my SD E-350 also with 3.73 gears. Thinking about regearing it but the van only has 18k miles on it - don't want to mess up warrenty yet <BG>.
This is quite a gadget. Takes awhile to get it honed in for MPG. But worth the effort. As you can see from the site it monitors a lot of things. I love it. It also does trouble codes.
Think Spring!
Just to be able to monitor your actual coolant and Trans temps. But when you throw in all the other stuffit does, it's a real bargain!
I've had mine three years I think. I got it to where it gives the mileage with in .1 of a mile per gallon of figuring by hand.
The nice thing is you can unplug it and move it to another vihicle.
Happy Towing,

By the way you aren't far from me. I live in the country, about five miles north of Utica.
I'm going for the new trailer on Friday and in one month we are heading to the west coast. Guess I'll find out when I hit the rockies
After we hit big water on the coast I plan to turn left until I see the boarder then trun left again, when we pas New orleans I'll decide to go straight or turn left for Illinois and home.
By the time this run is over I'll know if I need gears.

Just don't get in a hurrry in those mountains. When you get over 10,000 ft you will lose a lot of power. But you will get there, just watch that Transmission temp!
And have fun!
