I had my 2005 F250 4x4 brought in for 90000 miles service to another mechanic and they highly recommended an EGR delete for $2135 with software upgrade and everthing would remain in place, hardly detectable that it was deleted. In their experience, t mostly happen around that milage. This is very costly, but they said that if the EGR fails the motor repair cost would be double. Is this Ford so weak and unreliable?!
I have searched the forum and found a lot of opinions but not a clear answer, only thats illegal and I do not want to go down this path.
What are the alternatives and the risk if I leave it as it is?
HOLY COW! over 2k for an egr delete, that is just rediculous. If you are worried about legality then there is a company that makes an upgraded egr cooler.
here is a link to the upgraded egr cooler: Ford_Power_Stroke_EGR
I am not a mechanic and I do not know what is necessay to make a Ford250 diesel more reliable. They would install the EGR block off kit, Oil cooler, oil cooler screen and install a modified exhaust pipe (labor: 842, parts 1293). And it is even illegal. I bought this truck mainly to carry my truckcamper. I selected a diesel because they should run more reliable. What I learn now is, that it is obviously not the case.
Why should this upgraded EGR cooler solve all the problems? Can anyone explain for a non mechanic the sequence of events which results in a motor failure and what measures are possible without going illegal?
The achilles heal of the 6.0 is the in series plumbing of the cooling system. In otherwords coolant blockage in one component interupts flow to the next component down the line, classic issue is restricted coolant flow in oil cooler causing problems for the EGR cooler.
I would recommend possibly adding a coolant filter to your truck, staying on top of the oil changes, use OEM style oil filters only, tolerate no air pocket inducing coolant leaks and putting the $2135 in an interest bearing account for possible future issues.
They are not all problem childs as you can see in my signature line below;

What do you mean by RELIABLE? Name any make or model that is completely RELIABLE...how long have you owned this unreliable truck...all of its 90K...sounds like you need to stop listening to the hogwash your tech is telling you and spend more time on these forums and learn a thing ot two. Name one other powerplant that can go nearly 800,000 miles....not your gassers...but it sounds like you might have made up your mind already....hmmm. Before bashing your own truck and asking questions that have been answered hundreds of times here in this forum and many others...do a search and become informed. $2135...is a complete rip-off. Your tech is squeezing you for dollars...pure and simple. He learned about a particular weak point of your truck and is trying to capitalize on it. Do you own any other vehicles...same thing applies...they cost too much money not to be a little more informed than you sound to be. Just my 2 cents...
Sorry Moyock but I think you were a little harsh, most of us newbys are uneasy about our 6.0s and yes we ask the same questions over and over again but that is what keeps everyone sharp and sometimes new things come up in a discussion that was not covered in the hundreds of discussions before. Is this truck reliable? YES and NO depends on how lucky you are for one thing and how good you take care of your truck. Taking care of this truck border lines on obsession if you do it right. I love my truck but its a real Pain in the a** but it gives me something to do in my retirement years if it doesn't eventually send me to the poor house. Just my 2 cents...
Take a deep breath man, it's not that bad. If you are concerned about being legal, the link in the post above takes you to the improved EGR cooler. Here is the issue. The oil cooler and the EGR cooler are in series with the cooling system. The oil cooler is before the EGR cooler. Casting debris, common to all engines, travels through the system. It collects in various places but the oil cooler has small passages and is susceptible to plugging up and starving the EGR cooler for coolant. When that happens, the smaller amount of coolant in the EGR cooler, which is there to cool recirculated exhaust gases to a manageable intake temperature, flash boils and causes a coolant escape from the degas/overflow bottle. This is known as puking. This is dangerous to the engine. It can cause coolant ingestion into the combustion chambers and head gasket failures. The solution is not cheap but certainly not what you were quoted. If you monitor engine oil temp and engine coolant temp you can keep an eye on the oil cooler. If it has a temp spread of 15 degrees or more that shows the beginning of an oil cooler failure. The latest computer flash for your truck will turn on the check engine light if that happens.
Parts are available on Ebay. Oil cooler is around $225 and the NT EGR cooler is $350. A decent mechanic should be able to do this job in 4-5 hours. I would highly recommend adding a coolant filter to your truck. Dieselsite sell one for $125.00 and it is an easy install. There, now you have it.
Is your truck puking out the degas bottle? White residue around the cap and on the bottle is the evidence.
Thank you for this explanation. The truck is running without problems. That's why I was so surprised to get to know that the EGR repair kit as highly recommended. Now I feel more relaxed after having seen your posts.
Thank you

Teppler, while I appreciate your two cents...being a little harsh...hmm...not sure if I agree with you yet...I'll wait till my blood pressure comes down a little...you see I too love this powerplant and I can't stand it when the people who own them do nothing more than bash them or feel compelled to explain to others why they feel they are so weak or Unreliable....like I said its your opinion of my 2 cents...so now we're up to 4 cents...maybe someone got a little smarter out of the deal...unfortunately for to OP I was on my way to a Stress Test for Anger Management...who knows, they might cure me, but I doubt it. lol
i agree with charger and rick. Install a coolant filter and get the latest flash. If your oil cooler is still in good shape I think that will do the trick. If not go to the upgraded oil cooler and coolant filter. I installed a coolant filter on my truck when it had approx. 2,000 miles on it and have had no problems, knock on wood. Your mechanic must have a house payment due!
I do agree every power plant has it's weaknesses and this is one of the 6.0L. I love my F250 despite this and yep it will probably send me to the poor house but I am stickler for maintenance. Maintenance is the key to any trucks longevity especially in the Diesel world. I had my EGR cooler replaced/oil cooler screen/egr vavle at 55K, 33K the turbo. I owned the truck since it had 0 miles on it, and I put nothing but syn in it. Changed it @ 5K or a little before like clockwork. She is normally my daily driver and tow's a boat/toy hauler in the summer. WHO KNEW! My Duramax had issues too...no ones immune.
What is important is these forums and the advice given. I have not put a coolant filter on but it's on my list....I would put this towards the top. Get a set of guages as well, doesn't matter if electronic (Edge Insight like I have) or mechanical. They will tell you a world of information about your truck and give you a warning if you pay attention. They say a tell tell sign of an EGR Cooler/Oil Cooler plug is 25 or so degrees between EOT (Engine Oil Temp) and ECT (Engine Coolant Temp). If your monitoring those your head of most if not, IF and WHEN it happens it could cost more to repair. Not a scare tactic but things I have learned here. I spent 386 bucks on an Insight, Probe, and mount. I am having my EGT probe put in today but even with that said I have already set mine up to monitor key areas EOT, ECT, Trans Temp, EGT, Boost, and cause I can Turbo RPMS. There are a ton of other PIDS if you use something like an Insight. As I said though doesn't matter which way you go...Guages & Coolant filter are critical mods. The others depending on your area can be done further to bullet proof the engine. I would LOVE to do an EGR delete but good ol @$@#$@$@$ California decided to start smogging us. I am not going there now....bummer! Anyhow sorry for the long winded response and Welcome to the forums bro! I learn something new every day. Who says you can't teach an ol dog knew tricks
First thing to do as said above is coolant filter I have noticed they clean the cooling system pretty well. I have found a lot of debris in both of my 6.0s.
