OK I am going to have the transmission fluid and filter changed in the morning. My question is should I go to Ford and get a filter or can I get it a auto zone? Fords is $35 and Auto zone it $11. If I could save money that would be great but I dont want to damage a god transmision to save $24. Thanks
If you have ever taken one of these apart you would see they are just a piece of felt like material to sift out part foreign material . The Autozone part would do just fine, save you some cash, and not support the high priced dealer parts.

You are free to do as you please however, the pan drop method is old school. The fluid exchange method replaces all of the old fluid instead of only a small portion.
if you dont drop the pan, wont get the filter out. your 2001 should have 5 quarts in the pan, and you can get 13 out of the converter if you drain it. The 2001 has a converter drain plug
