Cleaning out transmission- methods?

Cleaning out transmission- methods?
When I removed the crummy, crumbly top cover on my 3 spd trans, some dirt and little pieces of rust fell down into the gears. Yes, I know...
I currently have the front bearing cover/throwout bearing sleeve AND the extension housing off to replace all the gaskets and seals. That's as far as I'm going...I'm not taking it completely apart!
Any suggestions for how to clean it out, or products to use? Or would you just refill it with gear lube and turn the gears by hand to pick up the junk and then let it settle to the bottom? I thought about blowing the crud out with brake parts cleaner because it dries quickly.
I'll soak it in degreaser, haul it to the car wash and blast it out if I have to...did that a couple times with old engine blocks...but I'll have to remember to get the crystal rinse. I hate spots!
Let the fun begin.

Diesel, Kerosene or mineral spirits are not nearly as reactive as gasoline. Cooler air temperature and ventilation are really good to consider using any solvent.
I would rinse it very well with mineral spirits or kerosene, rotating the gears around. Remove the bottom plug, flush it from the top and let it pour out the bottom. Use a parts washer brush to clean any surface you can reach. Dry it out the best you can with compressed air. I like mineral spirits because it will flash dry at room temp.
Changing the oil very soon after to flush any solvent residue is probably a good idea and ceertainly can't hurt.
