I just got a 1994 F150 4X4 extended cab SWB with the 5.8 motor. The truck spent most of its time setting in a garage or under a car port. It is bone stock with 161,000 on it. Runs good with no problems and most of the miles are highway. I just looked and it still has the factory plugs and ignition on it.
Here is where I need input please. I was going to go with new MSD coil, cap, rotor, and wires. I was thinking about E3 plugs( have them on the Buick and they are great).
I was also wanting to do a few other things to improve power and efficiency. I was thinking air intake, headers and duals (no cats) with Magnaflows.
Anything else or anything different would be really helpfull
Your talking about the air intake tube & filter right ? Most people that used them on this fourm said they did no good , a good drop in filter will work better..Lew
Supposedly the airbox top from a 460 is better, and you can also find a replacement top cheap on eBay sometimes. Banks makes a new lid that is wicked nice. I'd also just use a dropin filter unless you wanted to buy two filters from somewhere.
Stick with autolites. They run well and are cheap. I just put e3 into a 460 and it don't even idle differently (new rebuilt engine new heads and stuff swapped plugs after breakin)
Headers and exhaust will net the most gain. Just don't cheap out and buy the 99 dollar longtubes. Get smething nicer then headman or flowtec. They are thin and rot out.
I was going to test fit a set of my mustang headers for clearance and then make new headpipes and dual exhaust for mine. Just haven't cracked a manifold yet to justify tearig it all apart yet.
Don't waste your money on E3 or any similar spark plug. Just get good Motorcraft or Autolite plugs. Keep your factory air box and just get the I6/460 lower tube that goes from the box to the radiator support. Also just get a Motorcraft, Wix, or Purolator air filter. Don't waste your time with KN.
Like Lew said, I had the KN FIPK on my truck for a while and it did nothing. My truck actually got worse fuel economy and didn't seem to run as good.
Long tube headers are worth it , more TQ , don't use a chip just advance the base timing a few degress to like 12-14 btdc with the spout out , that will give you more performance ....Lew
Yes longtubes are worth whatever it takes to install them, and shorties are completely worthless unless the stock cats and Y-pipe are replaced.. though they are good if you use an aftermarket pipe and cats. Bassini makes a nice Y pipe for the truck with and without a cat, ths will be the easiest to install as well. Also not that all the aftermarket cats flow a LOT better than the stock versions so there's really no reason to not use one.
The I6/460 intake tube goes from the bottom of the airbox to the large rectangular hole beside the rad instead of over the top of the rad, and yes it moves more air.
Chips are a waste of money on these trucks they don't do anything you can't do or free. That includes advancing the timing which is easily accomplished by turing the distributor.. just be sure to lookup the proper procedure before doing so. Just like on a carbed motor where you have to disable vacuum advance to set the base timing, you do the same by removing the spout plug near the TFI module to disable computer controlled advance.
As long as it dosn't ping at 14 your alright , if it dose them back it down a little ...Theres not to much for free ? I like the underdrive pulleys , they will free up some more HP & 1.7 rockers will help to ...Lew
