Misfire Confusion

ok well for sumtime now my truck has been misfiring when i get around 45 to 60 miles per hour, when ever i go and take off the truck runs fine but as soon as i hit about 45 and getting above 2500rpms the truck just feels like its misfiring and like shacking all over and just hasitats to go..i did a check engine on it but i pulled up nothing.. and i took it to pep boys and they said its the lower motor but i think there full of ****..does anyone have any info.. im thinking i just need to change the coil boots for each cylinder..and thats it and prolly the plugs but i heard its impossible to get them all out..that most of the plugs break off inside of the heads.. but idk what is wrong i mean just moving at that speed the truck misses and if i let off the gas it stops, and then it gets bad at times but once past like 50 its ok and wont do it..and if i mash it the check engine starts to flash on and off so i need sum input before i run her to the ground.. thanks

The check engine is flashing because it is detecting a serious problem in the catalytic converter more than likely. Don't worry, the problem sounds like it is in the ignition. How many miles are on it, what year is it? If you have some mechanical knowledge the plugs are not too bad. I know we hear a lot about how tough they can be but Lisle make a tool that works really slick for pulling the broken plugs. It does confuse me that a misfire code is not coming up but I still think it is in the ignition. If you have 100,000+ miles on it change the plugs and boots as this is normal maintenance and it will not cost you down the road. As many of them plugs as I have changed, after 100,000 there is not much left of them. If you do change them yourself, you do not need to disassemble much, just have a long extension for your socket set and a good set of needle nose to pull the plugs out of the valve cover.

yeah i actually am a mechanic in my spare time lol.. i do all my custom work on my srt4, but i was just wondering where to start and make sure it is ignition before i did all the work and find out its trans..the truck is a 05 and it has 116,000 on stock plugs and boots.. so im 100 percent pretty much that was the problem..so ill start there next weekend and do the boots and plugs ill prolly do them the weekend after because i was gonna work on my car instead..but thanks for the info man...

Get the codes pulled and then find out what they refer to.
Most chain auto parts stores will read the codes for free. Then go to "Articles/ Specs" in the bar at the top of the page and look up the code explanation. Come and post the codes for us to look at.

You might want to read this thread before you spend the money on plugs and COPs.

ok well i do know the truck needs a new cat ive been smelling exhaust fumes but i didnt think it would b the problem to all of this..and the plug issue i know the brake off inside, my friends dad is a head machanic over here at southway ford in san antonio and he said on the 05's at least 3 to 5 will break off inside the heads, so he said to put sum antiseze on them the day before let it sit and to also have the special tool to take them out..but where can i buy the cat from besides the dealer. should i just cut it and go straight to the muffler or what..i dont wanna pay 300 for sumthing stupid as a cat when i can cut it or gut it

Unfortunately you're outside of your warranty on the cats.
Why not have your friends dad get you some cats at his cost?

you srt sounds nice i never took mine to the track but i had a catless downpipe and 3in cold air kit. on the boost its around 19-22 psi that hp numbers drop but tq still gains but its to small for any more boost at that point as you already know. my biggest issue was the stock wheels are to skinny to get a tire on thats wide and will not spin thru second and the trans sucks i blew 2 up in 48K miles (second gear dumps for massive burnouts like 40-100 ft with posi and no e-brake). my best set up was some 225-45-17's. good luck with the truck they are great most of the time.

yeah i have sum 225 swap outs i use at the track now. the best ive done on mine was 13.2 safly i can hit 12's but im not sure i want to..i also did a trans rebuild i had the typical 3rd gear grind and then i put a act stage 3 clutch in and i put all new syncros in the tranny and then just beefed it up a bit...i run 17 psi because i dont wanna go anymore the stock turbo can only pretty much hold 18psi peak at redline and then it will run real lean and burn a hole in a piston..i spike 20 but i redline 17 right now.. but i love her. i think i might trade her soon and get sumthing newer. im think either srt10 viper truck single cab 6 speed or jeep grand cheerokee srt8 but im not sure, i dont make enough to support all my hobbies..
